Movies That Make You Cringe…

Requiem for a Dream

King Lear.

I figure it’s unlikely I’m ever gonna get around to reading the Shakespeare I didn’t get to in high school and college, so now that I have Netflix I will occasionally find a movie adaptation or filmed play of the ones I missed.

I watched the King Lear with Ian Holm and very minimalist sets.

I was like “What horrible people! And if I never see one person gouge another’s eyes out that will be too soon.”

I hear ya. I had the further cringeworthy experience of seeing a professional production of King Lear with my classmates for a college English course. Then we discussed it in class the next day. They all loved it, I hated it with the burning heat of a thousand supernovas, and then I felt like a jerk even though I was just sharing my honest opinion.

Why?

It was hard to watch them destroy themselves with drugs.

When the guy shot heroin into his obviously infected arm, ewwwww! Then of course the famed Jennifer Connelly scene at the end.

Ooh, you’re gonna love Titus Andronicus!

I had a (high school) Shakespeare teacher who had us read that first. She used it as an illustration that just because Shakespeare wrote it, it wasn’t good…at all. It was an interesting tack, but I think I would have rather had the time to read another good one.
