Movies that may actually be comedies

2012 was a lot more enjoyable when I started viewing it as a live-action cartoon and not a sincere attempt at a movie.

I liked The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly a lot better when I realized that it was an extremely straight-faced comedy.

The Cabin in the Woods
I thought it was hilarious. Although, it was written by Joss Whedon, so it probably was intended to be viewed with a tongue firmly planted in one’s cheek.

I think the The Purge works better as a dark comedy than a action/horror film.

To be honest, I did as well. I mean had some “uncomfortable” parts like the Neo Nazi guy, but all in all I thought it was a dark comedy. The convince store part and the part with the Rocket launcher have me laughing to this day.

How about Sling Blade? Was it ever considered more comedic than drama?

And also Fargo as well.

I’m sure that, like most Coen Brothers films, the black comedy is entirely intentional.

Or the scene in the fast food restaurant where Michael Douglass’s character holds up the awful looking breakfast sandwich and asks if anyone can tell him what’s wrong with it and the little kid raises his hand.

That was SUPPOSED to be black comedy.

“Poltergeist” wasn’t. Yes, that movie bordered on being comedy to me. It wasn’t scary at all.

It is definitely squarely in the middle of the comedy-horror genre IMO.

I think I completely agree. I believe Leone’s approach to filmmaking is: “Life sucks. And life is funny. Let me show you some life.”

Oh, yeah. That was supposed to be funny. For sure.

I was waiting for years for Woody Allen to come forth and admit that Interiors was intended as satire. Or for Ingmar Bergman to say he thought so.

Well, now that you all think I’m dumber than a bag of hammers…

I somehow missed the first paragraph of the OP, the part about unintentional inept comedy.

For the record: I do in fact understand that Fargo is intentional black comedy.
I suggested it for this list because I’ve talked to several people who didn’t find it funny, thought it was straight drama. Made me wonder if Fargo’s humor was more subtle than I thought it was.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

I think if people don’t get that Fargo is a dark comedy then they don’t understand what dark comedy is, or the Coen brothers.

Viewing Fargo, such people would be out of their element.
(Yeah, I know- wrong CB film reference)

Any CB reference is a good reference.

I used to have a yearly Bad Film Festival, and am still collecting Bad Films in the hopes of having others. I agree with the OP that Shyamalan’s *The Happening is Hilarious – we watched it that way with our daughter. But I think many of his other efforts are, too. (Which is sad, because he really is an exceptionally good filmmmaker, otherwise).

Another of my choices for this is 10,000 B.C. – a movie tha’s so bad that, even if you buy the initial ludicrous premise and allow for it, it’s ytill incredibly bad. Only I think they were serious.

The movie that comes closest to the OP’s requirements is, I think, George Pal’s Doc Savage – Man of Bronze. It’s impossible to watch this movie with a straight face, or to take it at all seriously. (In the credits at the end, they spell “John Philip Sousa” – they use a LOT of Sousa marches – with the “USA” printed in Red, White and Blue). Look this one up (http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A2KLqIWQLbdRHH4A8Br7w8QF;_ylu=X3oDMTBrc3VyamVwBHNlYwNzcgRzbGsDdmlkBHZ0aWQD?p=Doc+Savage+Man+of+Bronze+Youtube&vid=752fed2fa638b1a59490ec15a6454274&l=1%3A41%3A00&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts4.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DV.4821664457493175%26pid%3D15.1&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.veoh.com%2Fwatch%2Fv19005270EAnwfaFD%3Fh1%3DDoc%2BSavage%2BThe%2BMan%2Bof%2BBronze&tit=Doc+Savage+The+Man+of+Bronze&c=16&sigr=12bh7nt48&age=0&&tt=b )

It’s a pity that this is the last film by fantasy film great Pal. Yet he apparently really though that he was making a pretty “straight” adventure film, and was reviving the 1930s adventure flicks that eventually lead to Indiana Jones.

That reminds me, This Island Earth was hilarious.

American Psycho, though that might have been intentional.
