The Buddy Holly movie with Gary Busey had some good rockin’ scenes in it…TRM
It’s a meandering tale of lads growing up east of the east end of London, with interviews and anecdotes from all involved, but when Oil City Confidential rocks, it rocks! (Youtube trailer)
No less than you’d expect from a biopic of Dr Feelgood!
This one is a guilty pleasure of mine. I have it on VHS, and if I happen to see it’s on while flipping through the channels I’ll stop and watch for at least a few minutes.
Also if you’re a fan of The Wire it’s worth a viewing to see Detective McNulty in full '80s hair metal regalia.
I see “Anvil” was already mentioned though I wouldn’t be making an actual recommendation, having not seen it (unless seeing the commercial 1,579,323 times counts.)Still, it seems like exactly what you’re looking for.
If glam rock will suffice I would recommend “Velvet Goldmine”. It’s got Jonathan Rhys Myers, Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale and Eddy Izzard, plus lots of trippy performances. JRM’s video is . . . mindbending.
Another vote for Stop Making Sense (though it’s really just a live concert DVD). And another vote for Almost Famous.
It Might Get Loud hasn’t been mentioned yet in this thread (there are reviews of it elsewhere on the Board), and is a great 2008 documentary of Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White meeting on a stage and talking about their history and influences. They play a little guitar, too.
All these movies rock due to their soundtrack or significant references to the band KISS:
Dazed and Confused
Detroit Rock City
Role Models
I Love You, Man also rocks somewhat due to significant plot thread involving the main character’s obsession with Rush.
To the excellent suggestions already mentioned, let me add Standing in the Shadows of Motown
And let’s throw in Easy Rider since it has a great rock 'n roll soundtrack.
Am I the only one who has seen Electric Apricot, the jamband version of “Spinal Tap” produced by and starring Les Claypool.
Holy crap, I MUST see this.
Wow, up to the 50th post and I still get to be the one who recommends The Girl Can’t Help It? Cool! It includes performances by Fats Domino, the Platters, Eddie Cochran, the Treniers and Gene Vincent among others, plus it has good lead casting in Jayne Mansfield, Tom Ewell and Edmond O’Brien. A very funny and enjoyable movie, IMHO.
Joe Dirt had a pretty Rockin’ Soundtrack
I saw Electric Apricot last night. Not as good as Spinal Tap, but definitely enjoyable. Especially if, like me, you have a man-crush on Les Claypool.
Ah, you stole my suggestion!
I feel this movie has been unfairly maligned. It does have a kinda scatterbrained plot, there are some odd details which aren’t explained, and it’s just generally weird (the sinister 1984 references are odd). However, there are some AWESOME songs in it. Placebo doing T-Rex and Ewan McGregor’s character singing “TV Eye” are just amazing.
