Thank You, Hometownboy, you’re too kind. I agree with your other choices – the one’s I’ve read, anyway. I’m afraid (ashamed?) to admit I haven’t read them all.
Steve Martin and Kevin Kline play a pair of cojoined twins: Frank and Lloyd Wright.
No? Okay, how about a comedy set in the 40’s: Biggs Bonner, an unflappable wise-acre from Brooklyn telling his stories to this guy he met with a Texas accent about his recent trek west to California. He encounters a cast of characters along the way: frumpy Midwestern hunter, loud-mouthed Southern preacher type, easily flustered pudgy fellow with a stutter, tempremental guy with a speech impediment, etc. At the close we learn that the guy is none other than Fred “Tex” Avery, who proceeds to translate these characters into some of the wackiest animated cartoons ever created.
No? All right, a different angle: the true story of the House of Medici:
House of Medi-what?
Set during the Florentine Renaissance, the Medici family supported many of the great Renaissance artists (Botticelli, Michelangelo and da Vinci) as well as explorer Amerigo Vespucci, the namesake of the American contients. Even more interesting (to me) is Giuliano Medici’s love affair with the supermodel of the times: Simonetta Vespucci, believed to be Amerigo’s sister. You’ve probably seen her: she was used as the model for the main figure in Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus.’ She was nominated as “The Queen of Beauty” at La Giostra (the equestrian games) in 1475. She is in several of Botticelli’s other works. She is also thought to be the model for Piero Di Cosimo’s portrait of Cleopatra with an asp around her neck. Some also believe she was the subject of Antonio del Pollaiolo’s ‘Profile of a Woman.’ She is also thought to have inspired Italian poet Angelo Poliziano.
A lot of drama with a number of incredible characters whose legacy lives on to this day.
I’d like for them to make huge epics of the other two Shaara books–Gods & Generals became “Gettysburg.” I’d gladly sit through 8 more hours of the stuff.
And I know you guys are going to laugh me off the board for this…but I always wished they’d made Overboard II. No! Really! I’m not joking! I wanted to see how their lives changed once they had Annie/Joanna’s money to work with.
More Star Trek movies with Picard. And I’d pay double to see a plotline where Deanna Troi accidentally gets sucked out of an airlock.
Judging by the past reception of swords and sorcery movies, I can’t see them making another any time soon.
I’d completely forgotten the Shannara series, those would also make pretty cool movies.
Alas, we’ll have to sit through Starship Troopers 2-8 and yet another teenager infested look at all the pretty people murder movie before they dare try another S&S.
I was so hoping D&D would be a great movie so as to promote furthre movies of the genre. There is a large fanbase, they just haven’t done it right yet.
Robinson’s Mars trilogy (Gotta have a decent movie about going to Mars or else we will never get there thanks to friggin Mission to Mars and Red Planet)
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Games
Metroid (I’m surprised no one has mentioned this one yet. I am that young/old?)
Hitchhiker’s Guide would make an excellent movie, but some of the stuff in that book is way way way off in left field.
soulmurk you bring up an excellent point. Judging by the reviews of the D&D movie, I can’t see one happening either. And if a Shannara movie was to be made, I’d have to say the annoying “battle strategy” part would have to be cut. You know what I’m talking about, where Brooks spends pages outlining the strategies they plan on using.
Wheel of Time would also make a great movie, but the extensive setting and character descriptions, while good, would also be dropped (most people have no attention span, sadly) The idea for an Alpha Centauri movie would be awesome too, but I’m not sure how one would do it. It is all pretty much up to the player in the game how it goes, sooo…
I heard a film might be made based on William s. Burroughs best novels, Junky and Queer. Set to star, supposedly, is Steve Buscemi. As, a big fan of Burroughs, I think this would be a great movie.
A movie about a rock band, whose members have strange supernatural powers.
A sequel to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. (I suggest calling it Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Two: Save Cameron From Military School!)
A movie based on the book sequel to the Exorcist, Legion. Not sure if it would work out well.
A film about a bunch of kids in a small town who get together. The local minister and other do-gooders are convinced the kids are up to no good. The catch? The kids are, indeed, worshipping Satan.
Movie based on Strunk and White’s Elements of Style.
i would LOVE to see an ender’s game movie, but i wouldn’t want it to happen for a couple years. it would be totally fucked up if made now, IMHO.
discworld would be doable, and i would LOVE it. i’ve read every single discworld in existance. all of them. they are even better for the extensive use of footnotes.
Mechwarrior would be nice. they could use the engine for the new game for the mech fights. hell, they could use the plot from the fourth game… as you can tell, it is one of those games which peter molyneux has mentioned as soon being the norm; instantly recognizable as one with actual paid hollywood screenwriters on the team, giving the game a much better and yummy, yummy plot.
but hey, a Homeworld movie would be REALLY rockin’! mmm… Homeworld… ohhhhh…
but you know what i REALLY want?

Uh, actually, they DID do this. It’s the “Exorcist III” and unlike “Exorcist II” it was written and directed by William Peter Blatty[sp?]. Follows the book pretty closely, but the ending has been changed slightly (I like the film’s ending better than the book’s.). Brad Dourif’s in the picture and its probably been the finest use of his acting abilities I’ve seen to date.
I’d like to see someone do “A Scanner Darkly” by Philip K. Dick (hell, just more decent Dick films in general) and “The Ivanhoe Gambit” by Simon Hawke, amongst others.
I can’t believe I’m gonna be the first one to mention The Foundation Trilogy. In the right hands, it would be completely awesome. I’ll second Ender’s game, also.
Agree with the excellent selections of CalMeacham (love the way they pronounced “mu TANT”) and HomeTownBoy.
Will add my favorite Heinleins (assuming, as Cal said, that they are done well)
Starman Jones
The Rolling Stones
The Green Hills of Earth (the short story has a killer first act, a great third act, but no real second, he just travels about, singing, would have to work that out)
And this one may get flames or groans from the SF fans, but:
I just do not buy that every single member of the Krell race bought it in that single night of mental breakdown. They’re out there somewhere, go find 'em. How about “Forbidden Universe”?
And of course the screenplays that I have written.
