Movies Worth Purchasing.

So, today I got notice that my video store (and subsequently, my job) is finito.

This means I get first dibs on movies for sale. Any suggestions as to what I should waste my money on? My store has (had) a wonderful cult section, as well as an adequate foreign section. PLEASE HELP

I’m just going to list my favorite movies:

Eternal Sunshine
Punch-Drunk Love
Adaptation
The Truman Show
Ghost World
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
Dr. Stranglove
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
High Fidelity
Nosferatu
Metropolis
There Will Be Blood
Garden State
Fargo
Bride of Frankenstein
Harold & Maude
To Kill a Mockingbird
Citizen Kane
Better Off Dead
The Artist
Network
50/50
The Goonies
Freaks
Rushmore
American Splendor
Election
Eraserhead
Best in Show
The Graduate
2001: A Space Odyssey
Wall E

Depends on how much you have to pay for each, and how much money you have to spend.

Cult films and hit foreign films should be relatively easy to (later) sell on eBay or wherever, and maybe even make a small profit. So I would buy what I liked - so if you can’t sell it, you are not upset about the fact. People can always probably find a copy of Titanic or the big blockbusters, but it might be more fun/challenging to be able to buy Harald and Maude, or Blechtrommel, or Das Boot or some other films at a discount.

Knowing me, I would spend far too much getting all of the cult/foreign films and just have them - selling them if I see I can get the right price, but keeping them if I don’t.

Good selection. I bought last week, the one at the top of your list.

Carnel Knowledge
The Last Detail
MASH
Bullitt
Play Misty For Me
Five Easy Pieces
The Haunting

You mean the 1963 b&w version, right?

Also if your store has Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, you should grab that.

Yeah..the Liam Neeson version is horrible.

There’s a really obscure movie out there about a war amongst the stars, where a young farmboy dreams of leaving his mundane existence to go out into space and become a hero, where he encounters an evil regime that is ruling the galaxy with an iron fist.

I think it’s called Jaws.

Liam Neeson made a version of Seven Samurai? I’d like to see that.

re-reads thread

Oh. Never mind.

But there is a Steve McQueen version of Seven Samurai which is pretty good.

Thanks!

Eternal Sunshine is my all-time favorite!!

One of my favorite movies is The Stunt Man, which I hear tell is a cult favorite. Perhaps your store has it. It is a terrific, overlooked masterpiece and I highly recommend it.

The Incredibles, Dark City and The Lord of the Rings trilogy are all great movies that have lots of cool special features on the DVDs.

I held off buying a DVD player for a long time. Then they released The Fellowship of the Ring and the first season of* Buffy the Vampire Slayer* in the same week, and I felt compelled to buy the player and the discs.

I held off buying a Blue-Ray player for a long time. Then they released the extended edition of the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Kenneth Branagh version of Hamlet, and I felt compelled to buy the player and the discs.

Spanish films [rec] and** [rec]2**, and their American counterpart, Quarantine. And the **Paranormal Activity **trilogy.

Why buy? Rip.

Miller’s Crossing.

That’s the one with the Cowboys, right? I think I saw that once as a very young kid, when I was too young to appreciate it. Might try it again.

I probably will purchase Rec. Quarantine’s not high on my list though, and I dislike Paranormal Activity a lot. Poltergeist on the other hand…

Yeah, probably gonna take that. One of my staff members loves it though, and we only have the one copy..

Already own Eternal Sunshine hahaha soooo good.
The Artist isn’t out yet btw, I’m buying that elsewhere it seems.
Altogether, a solid list though. I already had plans of buying Harold and Maude, Citizen Kane, Freaks, Fargo and the Truman Show.

I’m more interested in picking up cult flicks and foreign movies that I’d have trouble finding elsewhere. Going to get Repo! The Genetic Opera, Pink Floyd the Wall, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Little Shop of Horrors, Bottle Rocket, and Pi for sure. Then I’ll raid the horror section at the end for mindless crap at the end when everything is a dollar.

Dont Look Now if only for the allegedly real sex between Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland. But its also an awesome psychological horror film.
