Out of the hundreds of DVDs I own, the film Miss Nobody is one of my favorites. It’s an awesome black comedy. Yet no one has heard of it.
I didn’t come in here to mention this, but I ALWAYS mention it in the “bad movies you love” or something threads. Enough comedy to get a chuckle or two, with a surprisingly sweet story.
I came here to mention Stranger Than Fiction, which is Will Ferell’s attempt at drama, and I wanted to mention this first because I ADORE this movie.
The Whole Nine Yards: Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry being funny. Just a funny movie that you can catch here and there on TNT, but otherwise you don’t see much of it
Anyone here ever heard of The Blue Iguana ? If you like stylized heist movies, check it out.
I have read the book and enjoyed it. But I don’t see why I need to make a choice between the book and the movie. So I enjoy them both.
Grand Canyon 1991. Danny Glover, Kevin Klein and Steve Martin.
“Grand Canyon revolved around six residents from different backgrounds whose lives intertwine in modern-day Los Angeles. At the center of the film is the unlikely friendship of two men from different races and classes brought together when one finds himself in jeopardy in the other’s rough neighborhood.”
Sounds like typical middle class angst. But it’s more.

Earth to Echo - E.T. meets Stand by Me. Nice little tween movie. I fell in love with the characters. The plot kept me on the edge of my seat. I cried at the end. What more could I ask?
Lots of great ones here I’ve seen and my cue is loading up with the ones I haven’t. I’ll go with:
Primer - a time travel movie done right. You’ll be scratching your head the first time you see it, but it rewards further views.
Guns at Batasi - my favorite military movie, RSM Lauderdale makes Gunny Sgt. Hartman from Full Metal Jacket look like a pussy.
The Straight Story, David Lynch’s story of the man who drove his riding mower across Iowa. Richard Farnsworth’s last movie.
Miniseries get short shrift in our culture, sometimes they are fantastic.
5ive Days to Midnight A recently widowed cop goes to the grave of his wife and finds a police file for a cold case murder, it’s him, he’ll be murdered in five days. Then stuff in the report starts happening.
Ascension I’ll ruin it, it’s only three episodes and you should watch it.
Of course, you don’t. I just see Seven Faces as a case of making a silk purse into a sow’s ear. Arthur O’Connell in a movie always brings a wafting odor of Petticoat Junction.
I hope to see another film adaptation some day. It would probably have to be animation…
Tully - Tully Coates lives on a Nebraska farm with his father and brother. Tully is a sort of lothario, while the brother is terribly shy. Things get complicated when it turns out the father, whose wife died years ago, has been keeping secrets.
Wristcutters: A Love Story. This is the story of a road trip in the afterlife–the afterlife in which none of the appliances really works right, all the fast food is meh, all the jobs are boring, and everyone else around you is unhappy enough to have committed suicide. The movie is inventive, touching, bittersweet, and wryly amusing.

My Dinner with Andre. Everyone quotes Wally Shawn from the Princess Bride, but to see him in his breakout film is just a great character study.
It’s funny. I saw this movie when it came out in the theater because it got such rave reviews. Believe me when I say that it was anything but overlooked at the time it was made. The director was also highly acclaimed and one of the few foreign directors whose films I would look for and plan to see.
It was mind blowingly awful and one of the worst cinematic experiences of my life. It was purely an exercise in vanity but it is hard to figure out the identity of the culprit but Wallace Shawn, the star, and Louis Malle, the director, are prime suspects. It still gets 7.8 at IMDB, my 1star vote does not seem to have much effect.
Irma Vep. - It’s a movie about the French film industry, but I enjoyed it even though my knowledge of the subject is limited.
Citizen Ruth - Alexander Payne’s satire of the abortion debate.
Last Night (1998) - A Canadian film about the end of the world.
The Children (2008) - A horror film about killer children, which I thought was surprisingly well done.
The City of Lost Children - A wonderful French steam punk film from the director of Amelie.
Captain America 2: Winter soldier
The first Cap film was crap. The director was dialing it in, trying to squeeze as much plagiarism as they could into a tired, cliched film that was almost shot for shot identical to the Indiana Jones quadrilogy. The 2nd film, however, was directed by the Russo brothers, who knew their shit and put together a film that is essentially the Citizen Kane of the MCU.
For this thread, when you say fell through the cracks, compare any stat you want on Cap 1 vs all. Everybody knew it was doodoo. When you see the rise on cap 2, it doesn’t seem high, but it is by far the best MCU film made to date.
PS: Dr:tl: anybody mentions either twilight or 50 shades of X i gonna stab you.
Not really sure how a one year old movie that made $700 million could be said to have fallen through the cracks.
This is one of my mum’s favourite movies. As a result I always assumed it was well known.
It’s Such a Beautiful Day is my pick. One of my favourite animated films. It’s actually three short films edited together (and only about an hour long anyway), but it’s all a continuous story. You should check it out. It’s on Netflix, or at least Netflix Australia. It’s one of the three things you can watch on Netflix Australia.
“Lone Star” Chris Cooper, Matthew Mcconaughey and an all-time great baddie by Kris Kristofferson. (plus a bonus light-touch performance by Clifton James)
I know it got critical plaudits but I’m not aware of anyone else has seen it. Great film though.
Long story short, if you look at inflation, Cap 2 didn’t make nearly as much as say HP 7 or Avengers. Because of such a sad showing of Cap 1 along with the performance of other MCU films at the same time, I believe it fell through the cracks. Especially for the folks here, who consider themselves of a higher intelligence who may have skipped over this film because of the above, I believe it did fall through the cracks of those who may have ignored it.
Longer story short, Marvel is pretty much printing money nowadays overseas. 700 mill international gross is about 3X domestic. Doublechecked: 250 mil domestic, 450 mill overseas. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Wikipedia
I feel it was overlooked because Cap 1 was so bad.
