Oh, yes. This is one that isn’t diminished by repeat viewing.
This is one that I wish I had liked more than I did. It has one line, though, that my kids wish I would forget.
I don’t know that it fell through the cracks, but I don’t know why everyone doesn’t love Flash Gordon. Flash was meant to be played against music by Queen.
The Woman Chaser. It’s a black-and-white period piece starring a brilliant Patrick Warburton as a complete sociopath who decides that he needs to create a great piece of art. I caught in on IFC years ago and was blown away. Several years later, I managed to find an out-of-print VHS copy on eBay but there was never any DVD or Blu-ray release.
Out of nowhere, it popped up on Netflix Steaming last year and I did the energetic happy-dance of my people.
I don’t know about “absolutely adore”, but I really enjoyed The Return of Captain Invincible, which is a parody of super hero movies. One thing you do not learn about the movie from looking at the box of the VHS tape in the local video rental place is that it is a musical. When the President starts singing the first number, “Bullshit,” my jaw hit the floor.
No offense, but I think you might be on crack. De Niro’s last great film? Maybe if you don’t count Goodfellas, A Bronx Tale, Casino, Heat, Meet the Parents, The Good Shepherd and a dozen “kind of great” films.
I would agree and also throw in **Kung Fu Hustle **(which I liked a bit more).
Also I loved Oblivion.
Also the Judge Dredd film **Dredd **staring Karl Urban. It draws a lot of comparisons plot-wise to The Raid, but personally, I think it’s a much better Judge Dredd film than Stallones dumb film from the 90s.
Another film I just saw that I liked that I think fell through the cracks:
Luc Besson’s Lucy. To a certain extent, it’s kind of derivative of a live-action Akira meets every Luc Besson female protagonist. But I enjoyed it.
Between Lucy, Her and her Avengers’s role as Black Widow, I can see how Scarlett Johansson was picked to star in the upcoming **Ghost in the Shell **live action film.
The Omega Man: The Omega Man - Wikipedia
The first of three movies based on Matheson’s I am Legend. Because it is so old, it was very difficult to find for years, however, now it is available on youtube. Of the three versions, this one is the most faithful to the novel, and it is rather shocking to see a young Vincent Price.
Versus: Versus - Wikipedia
A small budget cult hit from Japan, it is known for it’s low budget, cheap special effects and almost nonsensical plot. However, the main character is a real-life street fighter and the martial arts is not bad. It is most known for one of the most thought-provoking endings in recent memory.
Still not seeing the “fell through the cracks” part. Falling through the cracks means that something was not noticed, or has been forgotten. “The Winter Soldier” was number one in the US for three weeks in a row, came out just over a year ago, has a sequel in the works, made $700M, and is part of the MCU. It also has an 89% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 253 critics.
I am having the hardest time finding Karl Urban’s Dredd actually. My main source of films nowadays is Redbox, so sometimes you get a tiny 2-3 week window to get a particular film.
Yeah, I dunno how Scarlett Johansson (and to a similar extent, Jennifer Lawrence) suddenly became go-to stars for female action heroes. Another of Johansson’s great sci-fi/action work is the indie Under the Skin: Under the Skin (2013 film) - Wikipedia.
But I guess this isn’t all that unusual, Sigourney Weaver and Jamie Lee Curtis did virtually the same thing for decades.
One of my all time favorites. “I have seen the future! It’s a bald man from New York!”
Lost In America is one of my all-time favorites, so I will accept your opinion as having the tiniest bit of validity with regard to MDWA. It’s Louis Malle after all.
Thank you Turpentine for your support.
Complete agreement to all who recommended “Lonestar.”
Also agree with recommendation for “Midnight Run” and with criticism of DeNiro critic and would ad “Mad Dog and Glory,” “Cop Land,” “Jackie Brown” and “Ronin.”
The Book of Kells - an animated tale about a boy, a forest sprite, and an illuminated manuscript.
The Borrowers - Based on a book, and made by the same people who had already made a TV series, it’s about a tiny family who live in a house that’s being demolished by a nefarious lawyer, starring Jim Broadbent, Celia Imrie, John Goodman, and Mark Williams.
The City of Ember - Saoirse Ronan as a young girl in a steampunk underworld finds the secret of the lost past. Bill Murray is in it as a greedy mayor.
Explorers - Three kids are sent a message in their dreams that leads them to build a spaceship out of junk, transporting them to some unusual characters. Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix.
I loved this movie as a kid. I haven’t seen it in forever though.
Another one I thought of:
Arthur Christmas: Santa is getting too old to do the job and his oldest son wants to take over but he doesn’t really have the Christmas spirit. The youngest son, Arthur, has it in abundance. Santa’s dad and one of the main elf characters are hilarious.
Trailer:
Ok I watched Joe Dirt 2 last night and I thought it was great. If you like the Joe Dirt you’ll probably like Joe Dirt 2.
Wellp I’m going to have to watch this now won’t I!
Sex and Death 101 is a movie that I wouldn’t say I adore, but I caught it on Showtime a number of years back and thought it was a great movie. It stars a pre-jail-ed Winona Ryeder and a not-yet-on-the-mentalist Simon Baker (with a Patton Oswald cameo). I don’t remember the details of the plot a whole lot, but I remember feeling happy after the movie.
I remember this, and really liked it. Oswald was some kind guardian angel. Winona was a serial paralyser, and Baker had a list of all the women he was destined to sleep with over the course of his life, including a whole cheerleading team on a broken-down bus.
Flesh and Bone . A traumatized man and his (previously) abused girlfriend make the first tiny baby steps toward trust and intimacy, until his sociopath Father comes onto the scene. The acting is so subtle, it’s a true work of art. Searching for it and watching the trailer just now, I realized for the first time that Gwynneth Paltrow was in it. She’s almost unrecognizable.
Not sure if it fits, since the OP asked for movies that we “adore.” I can’t say that. It’s incredible, and vastly overlooked (only 24 votes on imdb ferchrissakes) But it’s absolutely excruciating… in a sweet, aching, melancholy sort of way.
Ink - not even sure how to describe it - dream world being kidnaps a little girl and her father tries to save her with help and hindrance from other dream world beings. Better than I’ve made it sound. Low budget, no one I’ve ever heard of, but a good little movie.
