I think so, too. The Family Way, 1967, was one such starring Hayley Mills and Hywel Bennet, a young, shy, working-class newlywed couple living with her parents. It’s a rather sweet kitchen-sink drama, sort of like an extended EastEnders story. It’s too bad Hayley Mills didn’t make more ‘adult’ movies.
Tom Hanks’ and Meg Ryan’s first movie together, Joe vs. the Volcano. Bombed at the box office, more or less, and was overshadowed by Hanks’ and Ryan’s later collaborations.
But it was my #1 favorite movie for years. I saw it in the theater during its run, and picked it up on VHS a few years later. When I got the VHS copy, I spent a week watching it every single day, and on every viewing, I noticed something cool that I hadn’t noticed before.
The sequel: El Muchacho Rocketeer ![]()
I just re-watched one of my favorites that fits this thread: Get Shorty
Great style, amazing and funny dialogue, great performances and great music. It’s one of my favorite movies but feels mostly forgotten.
The sequel, Be Cool, however, is pretty bad.
The novels by Elmore Leonard that both movies are based on are both excellent as well.
Fierce Creatures, which had a cast with a lot of overlap with A Fish Called Wanda, didn’t get nearly the love that that movie did. But I thought it was even funnier.
It’s all right. I’m not a fan of how they sanitized the story when they filmed it, though. The recent widower in the movie is a single gay man in the book.
THAT’S where I’d seen her!
Thanks for this! I’m not familiar with any of these and will check them out.
I must admit that I don’t really know how to classify a film that “fell thru the cracks”.
It just seemed to me that most of the films I posted did not make a lot of money at the time.
But although I may well be wrong about a few of those films, I think anyone who hasn’t seen any of them will enjoy seeing them very much. I still enjoy watching them over and over again.
Amazon Women On The Moon - for years after it was released, everybody who had heard of it HATED it. I was shocked to see how highly Rotten Tomatoes has rated it.
Oh, I’m Soooo Scaaaaaaaared!
Not true – there are those of us who loved it.
The Son of the Invisible Man with Ed Begley, Jr. is priceless!
"Was the Loch Ness monster really Jack the Ripper?
Joe Dante and John Landis were two of the directors! Landis was co-producer!
I got the feeling that he wanted another Kentucky Fried Movie, but he was missing the Tickers and Abrahams, who really MADE KFM. Amazon Women is more hit-and-miss, but still worth it.
Nessie’s wheels squeaked!

I’m guessing she had no soul.
Gleeson plays another grumpy Irishman and Fiennes another criminal mastermind. Not much different IMHO.
Still a good movie though.
Boris: That’s it? One course in “The Big Picture”. 12 credits.
**
Dr Harry Wolper:** It’s very big. 12 credits probably isn’t enough, it’s so big.
My wife and I saw it in the theater and loved it. Along with at least 100 of the films mentioned so far.
It’s one of our favorites.
My suggestion is Some Girls from 1988. The trailer is terrible and totally misses the point of the film. The film is about love and sex, but not in the way you think. I can’t even begin to write about it as well as an IMDB user named grimes2020, so I’ll justlink to his review.
Oh, and yeah, My Dinner With Andre is crap. Pure, unadulterated crap with two bores talking nonsense at each other.
Lone Star is great. Another John Sayles / Chris Cooper gem is Matewan about a 1920 West Virginia coal mine labor debacle.
One of my favorite unsung movies is The Man in the Moon with a young Reese Witherspoon (her first role), Sam Waterston, and Tess Harper. The plot is coming-of-age but it’s really poignant and James Newton Howard’s score is just perfect.
Some of these are documentaries, some are foreign films, all of them are excellent IMO. This is by no means an exhaustive list; I just went thru one shelf unit, not all 2000± of my movies.
In no particular order:
Reality Chuck, I’ve spent the last few days reading through your entries. Great blog, and very entertaining. Thanks for the link!
I love this movie.
This one too.
Angel Baby - an Aussie film about two people who fall in love while at their psychiatric group sessions and decide to go off their meds and get pregnant. Very moving and gripping. I don’t think it’s ever come to DVD.
Bloody Angels - A police officer needs to go to a remote town in Norway to investigate the rape and murder of a down’s syndrome girl.
Fear, Anxiety, and Depression - Todd Solondz’s first movie and less dark than his other works. Extremelky bizarre, funny, and weird. A playwrite moves to new york to get famous and gets in with a weird crowd.
I just watched Bad Words and it instantly became one of my most favorite movies ever.
Looking for some good laffs? Give it a try.
Another one I would like to mention: Contagion. Everyone who wishes for a smart apocalyptic film, here it is. The characters aren’t morons, the scientists are heroes and it feels really realistic. I like it a lot.
