Movies you changed opinion on over time

Independence Day Loved it when I saw it in the theater. Even bought the VHS. Then I realized what a piece of crap it was. Beyond the Very Bad Science and featuring Jeff Goldblum, the plot is quite unbelievable.

Pretty much every Coen brothers movie I see seems just okay the first time I watch it, but ends up being amazing somewhere about the 3rd viewing.

Will Farrell comedies are generally better on repeat viewings.

Some movies, like Python’s Holy Grail or the first two Die Hards, I’ve simply just seen too often so all the juice is wrung out of them.

I originally really liked Blazing Saddles, but watching it again recently, either it failed to age well or I have, because it seemed pretty bad. Still like Spaceballs though.

As embarrassed as I am to admit it now, I actually really enjoyed “Independence Day” as a popcorn-munching, Sat. afternoon matinee summer movie.

Now I watch it and think “Wow this is incredibly dumb. I can’t believe I ever enjoyed this.”

I also couldn’t quite get into “The Big Lebowski” the first time around; I love “Raising Arizona” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, but the somewhat slower pace of TBL and subtler insanity sort of put me off at first. The more I watch it, the more I like it however.

Same here. Unfortunatly, I think this change came about half-way thru the first time I saw it!

Good music, but completely unwatchable. And a real shitty subtext.

I’m embarrassed to say I liked Steel Magnolias the first time I watched it. I saw it a second time and it’s just so maudlin and cliched I wanted to puke.

I was quite anxious to see Star Wars when it came out, due in part to the build-up (the TIME cover, etc.). It was billed as the best science fiction movie EVER.

I saw it and was underwhelmed. I realized that I went in with the wrong expectations. It wasn’t great science fiction, but was wonderful scifi/space opera. I saw it a second time a few weeks later, with the right expectations, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
