Every time one of these threads comes up, I have to mention Cutthroat Island. Mindless pirate adventure, ya gotta love it. Frank Langella as Dawg Brown is one of the best villains I’ve seen in a long time. And the final ship-to-ship battle is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen on film.
I liked Waterworld. I thought it was a cool plot and the premise was one I had not seen before. The acting was acceptable for a Sci-Fi flick and the action scenes were very cool.

I like Joe vs. the Volcano too. I hated it when I first saw it, but upon reflection I realize that it’s a very relevant parable of the human condition. And Detective Fish is the man.
Duh. Thanks! I obviously haven’t seen it in awhile and as soon as I read it, I saw it. Too many brain cells died in the Eighties.
I second Eyes Wide Shut.
I wish the European version (without the annoying CGI in the party scene) was available in the USA.
Exit to Eden was a fun goofy mess. Totally screwed up by focus grouping and multiple producers. (‘I know, let’s make it a comedy!’). A ton of fun if you’re in the mood.
“The Cutting Edge.” Oh god, it’s Moira Kelly as a Bitch on Ice and DB Sweeney as a former hockey player-turned figure skater. They pair up and --oh dear, will I ruin it for anyone?-- fall in love in spite of themselves. They also kick Olympic ass by doing this spin-throw thing that involves heaving the girl by her feet, risking splatting her brains against the ice but they do it anyway because they love each other so much they can make the impossible possible! It makes me want to spew just recapping the plot but I’ve seen it a dozen times and would watch it again in a minute. I can’t tell you why I like this lightweight thing.
Also love Flash Gordon, but I think that’s acceptable in a cultish sort of way, so it doesn’t count.
I’ll second (or third) Joe vs. The Volcano. “Brain Cloud?”
I’m surprised no-one’s mentioned Brazil yet. Great movie, completely tripped out 1984-esque plot, stellar Jonathan Pryce and DeNiro, but for some reason, no-one I hang out with seems to like it. I mean sure, it always gets mentioned on people’s favorites list, but how many people can get more than a lukewarm response out of their friends when it comes time to choose a video?
In response to the OP, Heavy Metal and Someone is killing the great chefs of Europe.
Well, I’ve found in the “theatre industry” here in Chicago, that it’s very hip to hate Kenneth Branagh just for the sake of ‘shocking the lay people’.
WHAT? You don’t like Kenneth Branagh? But he does Shakespeare and all that!
<<insert haughty theatre person reply here>>
In a hijacking sort of viewpoint, to list a movie that everyone LOVED that I HATED:
I must agree with Elaine on Seinfeld and say that I could not have hated The English Patient more if I tried, and I also found myself near tears of boredom and anger in watching Four Weddings and A Funeral, which I found…severly UNFUNNY.

I liked 5th Element. I thought it was extremely clever and entertaining. Everyone thinks I’m nuts.
That’s definitely another great film.
Ooooh! I love “Cutting Edge”! I wasn’t aware of the fact that other people hated that movie. . .
I also enjoyed “Cable Guy”; I thought it was a very intelligent and well-made movie.
And I think this next one will probably be the worst one on the list–I love “The Ninth Gate.” You know, that Polanski movie with Johnny Depp that got the worst reviews ever? I like it. I always thought that if I ever meet a man who likes it too, we’ll have to get married. We’ll be made for each other.
Smeghead, I agree with your call on The 5th Element. Bruce Willis and Mila Jojovich at their best. Although I don’t know what the hell that accent that Oldman was trying to pull off was.
OK, (sniff)I admit it. Just about anything Bruce Willis has ever done, (sniff) I love.
Blind Date
In Country
Sunset
The Last Boyscout
Striking Distance
Billy Bathgate
Sob…I even liked Bonfire of the Vanities. Oh lord, it’s true, it’s all true.
::Collapses in an emotional heap::
False_God mentioned Brazil, which I haven’t seen, but while we’re on Gilliam, can I get a whoop-whoop for 12 Monkeys? I loved that movie, and I can barely find a soul who remembers it (in real life, anyway. Online everybody knows what I’m talking about).
Did anyone else see the Road to Wellesville? I loved that movie, but everone i’ve ever asked about it didn’t like it. I love most of Matthew Broderick’s movies, and i still occassionally find use for the phrase “She was having her… womb… manipulated”
Titanic. DiCaprio is a beautiful man, and I’m a sucker for romance.
::quickly flees before anyone can call me a teenybopper::
I don’t think Titanic counts. There’s been a tremendous critical backlash against it, but among ordinary moviegoers (including myself) it’s still a very well-liked movie.
Four films–
National Lampoon’s European Vacation– I still think it’s the funniest out of all four. Especially that scene when Clark Griswald starts a brawl at Octoberfest.
Stargate– If it’s campy, I like it. (Besides, that scene when James Spader, resurrected from the dead, starts talking the language of the weird Egyptian/Alien people, is hee-larious.)
Mars Attacks– Got panned when it came out, but I thought it was great fun.
The Fifth Element– Gotta agree with someone else on this board. That was a damned fine film.
12 Monkeys is one of my favorite flicks, period. But then again, I am online, as you say.
CrankyAsAnOldMan, I am with you. I also love “The Cutting Edge” for no rational reason. (Well, maybe Moira Kelly) Also “With Honors” is a classic for much the same irrational reasons.
Also (more forgotten than hated):
Rad - because who could be cooler than Cru Jones (too bad this isn’t even in print anymore)
Real Genius - because it’s the best college geek movie ever
Count me in on Eyes Wide Shut. I’m a recently initiated Kubrick fan.
I’d agree with 12 Monkeys, too… but that was after prom, and I was too distracted with trying to break up with my date to focus on the vital parts of the movie.
I, erm, like Sister Act… no one around my place can stand it. Nuns and the mob - come on!
