Movies you liked but most everyone else thought sucked

When I was in college, a girlfriend and I paid FULL PRICE to see this four times. I STILL think it’s funny (I used to have the ‘deep in the heart of Texas’ scene on my answering machine).

I too loved “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” and own it as well. I cannot hear “Tequila” without thinking of the Big Shoe Dance! But Large Marge is the bit that always gets me

I too like Starship Troopers. But I just need to clarify a few points to the others who do as well, I believe it was Quassar who had a nice long post on why s/he liked it on the first page.

This movie gets you to root for the nazis. I hope you do realize this. It was fully intended to be cheesy and fake (but not nearly as much as it comes off as - which makes it the wonderfully bad movie it is) in order for you to get behind “the cause”, and root for the “good” guys.

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was actually fairly well received by critics and audience alike. I myself just bought the DVD, which includes director’s commmentary with Tim Burton and Paul Reubens. I have only met one person my age (I’m 22) who doesn’t like this movie. And I always have time to see the “Large Marge” scene.

First time I saw Starship Troopers I really liked it. The second time I sat down to watch it it annoyed the piss out of me.

(Mofo Rising, who as a kid saw quite a few movies that he really liked, does not want to push luck by renting them today.)

You haven’t seen The Experts then, have you?

I have one that I will only cop to because this is the internet and I don’t have to revel my identity

“Thunderbirds are go!” It’s 60’s, it’s cheesy, it’s sci-fi-ish, and best of all it’s freakin’ puppets!! Who could ask for more!

On the other hand my wife likes Star Trek V so I don’t feel so bad.

Wow, I truly thought I was the only one!!! Now I have seen about 3 people on this board say they liked “Stuart Saves His Family”. The thing about this movie that always gets me is not just how funny it is, but the touching parts as well. Like when Stuart tells Laura SanGiacomo how proud he is to have her as a friend and when Stuart’s brother shows up at the end at the Christmas party. I cry every time!

I’m just going to list them. I make no apologies.

Mom and Dad Save the World
13th Warrior–what I thought of when I opened this thread
5th Element
Mallrats–many, many times
Anything by Terry Gilliam ROCKS in my book–hence, my username
Stuart Save His Family–‘look, I’m should-ing all over myself’
Starship Troopers
All the Highlander movies
ANY bad 60s movie containing any of the following: Peter O’Toole, velvet suits, go-go boots, false eyelashes, small uncomfortable sports cars, catchy theme songs, cravats, little flats located at the top of endless narrow staircases, psychadelic dream sequences, bad–I mean really bad–dialogue fused with hip slang…oh, and vampires.

ARMY OF DARKNESS!

I think that’s a classic, but most people disagree.

“fight club” and “blair witch” were mentioned, but weren’t they both pretty popular?

“I’m gonna get you sucka” is great.

I seem to remember liking “ski patrol” which several people have told me they dislike. Then again, I also had remembered liking “Caddyshack 2” before seeing it again recently.

I liked Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Bean also.

No offense, but from where I come from, this is grounds for divorce!

The Mummy
Starship Troopers
Flash Gordon
Almost any Jackie Chan movie (Gorgeous had a couple of good fight scenes, but moved too slowly)
The Last Dragon
Hudson Hawk
The Beastmaster
The Blair Witch Project
Anaconda (Funny, funny movie)
The Wild, Wild West
ID4
Con Air
Big Trouble In Little China
Soldier
Action Jackson
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (Esp. the mine car/rollorcoaster scene)
Police Acadamy
Blast From The Past
Toys (More like an obscure movie than one considered to have sucked)
Sergant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Saw it in high school. Would love to see it again now and see if I can stand it)

Many, many more. I have…eclectic tastes.

Hey, my daughter LOVES this movie. I made her watch it so she’d know what kind of movies I watched when I was her age–a sort of “When I was your age I had to walk in hip-high snow up-hill both ways” kind of thing. But she loved it and my point was lost. Go and rent it. It’s good for a laugh and the music is…well. What can I say?

Count one more for the Hudson Hawk camp. I keep showing it to people, and they keep backing away, smiling but keeping an eye on me. No one ever gets what I see in it. I’m not too sure myself. I recognize that it’s not a really good movie per se, but I love it anyway. (“I’ll torture you so slowly you’ll think it’s a career.” Good stuff.)

Gotta agree with Notorioustobias on Army of Darkness, or indeed any Evil Dead movie. None of my friends seem to like them, but I can’t get enough of that crazy Ash :). The special editon DVDs are not to be missed.

“Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins” I love Fred Ward, but what makes me watch this one is Joel Grey. Great campy fun.

“Big Trouble in Little China” Okay, I just think Kurt Russell is the best action star around. Much better than Ah-nuld, Stallone, Willis, et al. This movie is pure fun, and Kurt Russel wears great boots. HIs sort-of self parody of Snake Pliskin is hilarious. If you haven’t seen this one, pick up a video and your favorite alcoholic beverage. Best seen with some wasted friends.

And you gotta admit, that is one bad ass drill sergeant.

“Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins”, another good choice. There’s something just infecdtiously silly about it, but it works as an adventure too. Kate Mulgrew is good in a small role, especially when left alone with Joel Grey.

And I’ve heard that the script for “Big Trouble in Little China” was originally written to be a sequel to Buckaroo Bonsai.

“Eateries that operate within the designated square downstairs qualify as food court, anything operating outside the said designated square is considered an autonomous unit for mid-mall snacking.”

I like Sgt Pepper. My sister gave it to me last Xmas.

Also:

Tron - not only do I love this movie (sadly), I own it and I’ve seen it well over 2-300 times.
Cutthroat Island and A Kiss Before Dying
Add me into the Hudson Hawk crowd.
Tremors was a great movie!
UHF was brilliant

and…

The Mask of Zorro! (the Banderas/Hopkins version).

Inventing the Abbotts

It was pretty much panned by the critics, but my sister and I love it.

1941…Steven Speilberg comedy…

and of all things…“Heaven’s Gate” (I can still hear that sound track in my head…the fiddle.)
