I’m so glad I read this. Now I don’t feel like such a moron for truly enjoying Starship Troopers, The Stupids, and Mom and Dad Save the World.
A movie that I, and many other like is BLAZING SADDLES. My problem is that I seem to be the only one that understands how important this movie is. I actually believe it to be the greatest movie ever made.
I loved Spaceballs when I was a kid. Pizza the Hutt! Hilarious! Well, it did come out when I was in fourth grade. Now I don’t know if I could watch it if I wasn’t drunk.
A Fish Called Wanda was pretty well received. If you want to see a bad version of it, rent Fierce Creatures.
Dark City and Pi were also well received. There’s a commentary track on the DVD of Dark City by Roger Ebert, who pretty much declares it a work of towering genius. Interesting note, the title of Pi is not acutally Pi but the symbol for pi.
Here’s one that me and my friends love, but I don’t know if anybody else likes it. National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon I.
“What you got there?”
“Well, it’s a dry, itching, burning sensation.”
“What the hell do you expect, your damn foots on fire.”
Life Stinks. Beyond a doubt the worst film Mel ever made. Open and closed at theaters in less than one week. I left Denver on a Wednesday for Vacation, it opened Friday, I said to myself ‘I’ll wait until I get home Thursday to see it.’ Got home, it was gone. Had to wait for it to come out on video Life Stinks… and so did this movie.
lawoot, I think you’re missing the point of this thread. We’re not naming films we think are bad. We’re naming films other people think are bad but we think are good.
Independence Day (Recently bought the special edition DVD)
Virtuosity (I recommended it to a friend who ended up turning it off after half an hour!)
Toys (Just so surreal and strange… loved it, but haven’t seen it in a while).
The Blair Witch Project (Loses some of its impact on subsequent viewings, but the the last few minutes, plus the scene with Josh’s bloody shirt, still get me).
Dark City: I can’t believe someone else watched it! I have yet to talk to someone else who has seen it, even though I recommended it to everyone I know. One of the best movies I’ve seen.
Pretty much any teen movie from the 80’s and 90’s. Yes, I am ashamed, especially since I’m almost 30. Sometimes, at 3 in the morning, I still put in my copy of Gotcha with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino.
I actually liked Star Trek 5. But speaking of grounds for divorce, my ex-husbands favourite movie was Hudson Hawk. Coincidence?
I also own the entire V mini-series. Both of them.
Maybe not universally panned, but I’m a sucker for romantic comedies. I watch them at night when I can’t sleep. All day I’m like “blah - romance sucks”, but at 3:00 am, I’m sighing over stuff like When Harry Met Sally. Please don’t tell anyone. It’ll ruin my reputation.
I will be impressed if anyone here likes The Island of Dr. Moreau, with Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. It blew me away the first time I saw it, and I still feel it was underappreciated.
I agree with a lot of the previously mentioned movies.
Dark City - Excellent premise and execution
Mall Rats - All of Kevin Smiths stuff rocks
Hudson Hawk - One of my all time favorites
Army of Darkness - “Good Ash, Bad Ash, I’m the one with the gun”
Toys - Surreal and light hearted
Titan A.E. - “I think I’ll call it Bob.”
New ones not listed by previous posters…
Wing Commander - Just now geting play on HBO, I watch it all the time.
I am kinda ashamed of this one, please don’t flame me too badly.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - Just the first one.
I saw the second one in the theater on a date. It wasn’t my fault, she chose it.
I think that ‘Island’ is a remake of a remake of a remake. I didn’t see the latest version, but vaguely remember seeing an early version that I liked just because of its campiness.
I liked “Shallow Grave”, but it creeped everyone else out.
I was watching a comedy and they just saw a deadly war between roommates. At least Ebert agreed with me.
The trick to not embarrassing yourself in threads like this is wait until it gets really long. Then, when you post your guilty little secret, no one will read it. Once a thread gets longer than 2 pages, no one reads the end. People tend to read the first page or two then post what they think.
I’ve read all the posts and no one hase mentioned my favorite movie that everyone thought was awful.
Fools Rush In with Selma Hyack and Mathew Perry. I think it’s against the law to like a movie that stars Mathew Perry. What can I say? I’m a sucker for screw-the-girl-you-meet-at-a-bar, clash-of-culture, shot-gun-wedding, romantic comedies.
I can’t believe some of the movies that people seem to think that other people thought sucked… in particular A Fish Called Wanda? I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t love that movie…
anyhow, I will add yet another second to both Stuart Saves his Family and Fools Rush In, and add several more contenders:
Teen Witch (I’m hot! and you’re not! So top that!)
I loved Titan A.E. I thought it was one of the best movies I saw this summer. I’m going to get it on video as soon as it’s available.
Someone else (I can’t remember who) mentioned the first Power Rangers movie. I saw that in the theater, and I have to admit that it was actually much better than I’d expected. I haven’t seen the second one so I can’t comment on it, but my brother, a die-hard Power Rangers fan, says he hated it.
Definitely has to be Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Objectively, an awful film. But, seeing four rock stars in makeup beating up some furry white monkey-type creatures? Man, that’s entertainment.
I’m always surprised by how many people HATE Starship Troopers. I love it and it was one of the first dvd’s I bought.
I don’t think anyone has mentioned Eyes Wide Shut. I enjoyed it and I only know one other person who liked it.
I also liked Waterworld. The boat was very cool.
Oh, and I thought Major Payne was hilarious but ONLY the first time I saw it. I was with a friend and we were laughing our fool heads off in the theater. I mean out loud, falling down, and rolling around on the floor laughing! Well not really rolling around but the theater was empty so we were pretty loud and I think I did acutally fall out of my seat at least once
Damon Wayans was SO freakin’ funny! I’ve seen it since and didn’t even crack a smile…oh well.
Uhm, Connor. Please read this extract from my first post:
I suspect that should settle any doubts you might have about my gender. By the way, the sexy babe alluded is Dina Meyer. Thanks to GuanoLad for indirectly pointing that out.
[FLASHBACK] I am just recalling that she also appeared in a few episodes of Friends.
Now, onto other matters. Connor manifested;
I fail to grasp how exactly did the movie got people rooting for the nazis. Please elaborate.
One last comment, I heard about a John Waters movie called The Pink Flamingos, which, IIRC, is supposed to be one of the worst motion pictures ever. Does anyone know why? Is it really that terrible?
Here’s a few links for you. I recommend taking a look at the last two. They focus more on the differences between the movie and the original book. Its really fairly interesting.
