movies you loved that got horrible reviews...

The faculty
Plan 9 from outer space
attack of the killer tomatoes
all the Psycho sequels
alll the revenge of the nerd sequels
Bill and Teds Bogus Journey
Bill and Teds Excelent adventure
Joes apartment
Dead man on campus
and every other bad movie in the world

Starship Troopers
Mars Attacks!
The Phantom Menace

OTOH, I have disliked several films recently that get almost universal praise. Believe me, this is not due to any desire to differentiate myself from “the mob,” either.

Rat Race. All the reviews I saw were tepid, and every single one said it was not as good as Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which it was somewhat based on. My wife and I found it hilarious, and much more enjoyable than that earlier film.

Escape from LA.

The Big Hit was stupid. Perfectly stupid. And I laughed like a loon from beginning to end and want to buy it on DVD.

Same goes for Big Trouble in Little China.

I agree with InquisitiveIdiot and the others who said A.I. should have ended underwater, but up to that point, I really enjoyed it.

Now to contribute something of my own. Though I realize it’s a painfully bad movie, there will always be a warm place in my heart for Cannonball Run.

Toys.

Also the already mentioned Fifth Element and Mars Attacks!.

Tomb Raider
Jurassic Park III

Yeah I’ll go for Tomb Raider and the Fifth element. Also I loved Vanilla Sky, and although yes the original was much better I thought Vanilla Sky was also bloody good

Last Action Hero. I thought it was clever and funny and a lot of fun.

Tattoo (1981)
Godzilla (1998)

I second Last Action hero, and I second Phnatom Menace. WHile neither of those flicks were going to win any awards, they were competantly done and fun to watch.

I didnt go in expecting another Star Wars - that movie was great, but having matured a bit, I can see it had some pretty big flaws. Both are a rough movies, and George Lucas tried to use some innovative techniques and epic storytelling. Jar-Jar was lame, but I can see that he basically made it as a kid’s movie, which most people just didn’t realize.

And I LOVED Attack of the Clones. I thought it finally presented an intellkigent, scheming master villain in the Ming the Merciless mold (only smarter) who actually did something pretty bright. I liked the slow degredation of the texture from the soft and grand blues and metal shades of TPM to the harsh red and black of AoTC. ANd I actually thought the over-wrought acting of the “love scenes” quite appropriate for the immature people they are.

And I found the Anakin-to-Darth Vader transition to be done well so far. He started out innocent, and stranegly enough it was a combination of bad and no parenting sent him down a path of sel-indulgence, isolation, and resentment (combined with respect) towards Obi-Wan. Its really the love towards his mother which the Jedi willfully ignore, that really begins on the path that makes that mere personality problem into something of real evil. Although SW is epic, the roots of evil are always banal…

Plus, in all honesty, I found Hayden Christianson to be a very good actor, while the role of Senator Amidala to be less-than fulfilled.

I also applaud G. Lucas for making a plot where its not completely obvious what is going on behind the scenes, but where things fit together with some thought. All the hints are there - every clue you need exists. I particularly like his attempt to include other forms of government. For example, the freewheeling anarchy of the desert planet, limited only by the will of certain figures who control the economy of Tatooine. The elected monarchy (not without precedent) was also a nice touch.

The 1985 movie Creator with Peter O’Toole & Mariel Hemingway was savaged by critics, ignored by audiences, and forgotten by posterity. I think it’s a very sweet and surprisingly intellectual movie that was about 15 years ahead of its time. (O’Toole is an aging scientist obsessed with cloning his dead wife.) Beautiful soundtrack and some genuinely touching moments (most of them O’Toole’s).

I didn’t realize this one had been savaged. Another vote here. Very moving, especially at the end.

A Life Less Ordinary got bad reviews? Blasphemy!

I loved it-I consider it a romantic comedy for people like me, who hate romantic comedies.

And Ewan McGregor=SWOON
