The Muppet Movie
Amelie
Whale Rider
And several kids’ movies/Disney/Pixar movies. The Incredibles. A Little Princess. Matilda. Monsters Inc. The Secret of Roan Inish.
HOLD EVERYTHING. Your comment prompted me to check for the 1000th time in 25 years to see if there was any news, and there is! According to Amazon and several online reports it’s being released in a special edition DVD on in September. Exclamation point.
Misgivings: the picture quality on the old LaserDisc was terrible (I owned it, made a digital copy which I still have); the suddenly aborted special edition disc a few years ago was reportedly scrapped because of formatting difficulties in getting a decent transfer; and, the new 4k release is already streaming in online “theaters” and reports are that the picture quality is wretched. Hopefully the physical disc will present better than streaming.
Anyway, it’s wonderful news but I expect to be disappointed.
To Have and Have Not
North by Northwest
Charade (just watched this last night for the umpteenth time)
My Cousin Vinny
Groundhog Day
Tin Cup
Father Goose.
Grant’s penultimate film, Leslie Caron (!) My coconut is empty! Love it.
Monty Python’s Life of Brian
Yes, Groundhog Day. Seen it more times than I can remember, but always with at least a year in between to keep it fresh.
Also:
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)
- My Neighbor Totoro
It’s stood the test of time well. Warm, brilliant, and creative. For young kids, and people who are young kids at heart.
- Whisper of the Heart
A gentle and wonderful movie about young love… and about craftsmanship and the arts.
I’ve never seen a trailer that even begins to do justice to Whisper of the Heart, so if you watch it, watch the full movie.
In explanation:
Groundhog Day. The storyline is so uplifting and funny.
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) This is the movie that La La Land tried to emulate. The final scene is wonderful, if melancholy.
I checked as well once you typed that. I remember seeing it as a boy in the theater when it came out. It was a wonderful movie. The studio’s website suggests you can buy a DVD or Bluray, available September 8. You can also rent it on Kinonow.com for $10.
I rarely watch a movie more than once but if any of these happen to be on, I always watch at least for a while.
Bringing Up Baby - always makes me laugh
Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation - I love the era and the location and it makes me laugh
Penny Serenade - touching
Life With Father
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Yours, Mine, Ours - I love the era
Great one…
My go-to movie (and my favorite ever) is “Harry and Tonto”
Any of the National Lampoon’s “Vacation” movies
Any of the Naked Gun movies.
Any of the TOS and NextGen “Star Trek” movies.
The original “The Day the Earth Stood Still”
“Forbidden Planet” with Leslie Nielson
“2001: A Space Odyssey”
We love to laugh, and we’re hardcore SF fans.

The Shop Around the Corner
Jaws
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Some Like It Hot
The Usual Suspects
Shadow of a Doubt
Double Indemnity
Shouldn’t “Galaxy Quest” be on your list then? That was one funny movie, at least for anyone with a passing knowledge of Star Trek and Star Trek fandom.
“Galaxy Quest,” of course.
Hard to find, and it goes by several names, is another SF spoof movie, “Spaceship.”
In it, the alien monster sings, “I want to eat your face.”
