Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

Two musicians I enjoy, making a movie that doesn’t seem interesting to me. You didn’t provide a take on it.

Good Grief. A Daniel Levy film. DL’s husband dies at the beginning and he goes on a year+ of grief and discovery. Has the (mostly) expected assortment of friends to accompany him on the journey. It is set in London and Paris.

Some of it is the usual kind of scenes and such for this type of story. But it has some nice original parts here and there. The story dictates a good amount of sad stuff but it has some small funny bits here and there. One of the secondary cast members stands out to me: Celia Imrie as The Lawyer. (Americans might remember her from Better Things.)

IMDb has the tag “coming-of-age” for it. Whuuuh? Levy was almost 40 when he made this. That’s closer to “mid-life-crisis” territory.

A decent enough film to watch if you have the time. Some of the songs used were quite nice. Wish it was more original.

Give it 3 Christmas cards.

(Later I started watching Season 4 of Only Murders in The Building which had Eugene Levy in it. A veritable night of Levy-ty.)

You should have moved on to SurrealEstate which stars Sarah Levy.

Wouldn’t Schitt’s Creek be the obvious follow-up?

I love her. I’ve seen her in tons of things, and she’s always at least very good. I loved her in Better Things. A not terribly sympathic role played just right.

Going with the theme of new (post Schitts) stuff that they are in.

I Am Legend 2007 Wiĺl Smith

Based on the 1950’s book by Richard Matheson.
.
Will Smith is a post-apocalyptic scientist looking for a cure to a virus. Any humans that didn’t die were turned into nocturnal mutants.

Somehow Will survives and is doing research to find a cure. The mutants set traps to catch Will. It’s set in New York and there are thousands of mutants. It seems impossible Will could survive in that environment.

It was on AMC. I wasn’t overly impressed. It was ok. Nice way to kill a couple hours on a dull afternoon.

The Omega Man 1971 with Charlton Heston is also based on that book. I haven’t seen it.

The Last Man On Earth is a low budget Italian film starring Vincent Price also based on the book. It’s the adaptation that is closest to the book. Richard Matheson co-wrote the screen play.

Fun Fact: The fountain in the last scene is the same one from the opening of Friends.

She Freak (1967)

A remake of Todd Browning’s Freaks. It’s a $75,000 production that makes good use of carnival locations and that glorious color saturation only found in films from 1965-67. The only actor worthy of a Wikipedia entry is Felix Siller (Cousin Itt, Twiki in Buck Rogers, and an Ewok in RotJ.) Apparently, this was the start of a nine year affair Siller had with the statuesque lead actress. Entertaining schlock, but the best parts are just the exterior shots using real carnival visitors and workers.

I like Gladiator II well enough. I enjoyed it as much as the original, I suppose. Here’s the thing though … I would have never thought that that wimpy little Lucius kid would be pegged as the new protagonist, though it does make sense. I mean, who else from the first movie could it have been? I suppose I thought it was just going to be a new story with new people that referenced the first movie and not a direct connection. I don’t know why I would have thought that of a sequel, but there you go. Here’s another thing though … am I the dumbest motherfucker on the planet or was I suppose to know that Lucius was Maximus’s son this whole time? Because I didn’t.

Today I sort of watched The Electric State. I was working and I had to cover the little dog room and there weren’t a lot of pups in there so I just sort of played it in the background and paid attention to it every once in a while. I really liked the art style - that weird retro-art-deco kind of thing. I think I’d like to watch it again to get the full experience.

A Minecraft Movie (2025). Fun enough movie. I felt it had a little too much narration at the beginning, though it was necessary to lay down a lot of the background for the world we end up especially for those with little knowledge of Minecraft itself. The story is fairly standard and it is a comedy that will hit well with certain demographics but probably completely miss with others. I feel that I was halfway in that mode with some sections and parts making me laugh because of my experiences, but others that were just meh. I did not expect Jason Momoa and Jack Black to pull off being a duo but it worked in a way I had not expected. Overall, an OK movie.

An amusing bit of trivia about the movie is that a song in the movie called Steve’s Lava Chicken made the billboard top 100 and at 34 seconds is the shortest ever song to do so.

Thunderbolts* (2025). I quite enjoyed this movie. For me anyway, this was hit after several misses with recent Marvel films. I found it nice that the there was a lot more about psychology and mental health that just big action scenes. The ending, especially with the fictionalized headlines were particularly enjoyable. Yes, the mid and end credit scenes set up other movies, though the last one was bit telegraphed for me by the listing of the songs in the credits with one that was clearly not in the main film. For me anyway, this was enjoyable, and that really is due to the chemistry of the actors on screen, with another set, I do not think this would have worked.

Havoc on Netflix. And I thought John Wick was violent. At least Wick had recognizable plots. This thing was nearly incomprehensible. Drugs, money, ::mumblemumblemumble:: KILL! KILLLLLLLL!

Oh good, Kind Hearts and Coronets just came to Tubi. I’m there.

I’m not sure yet. At the moment, I’d say this movie didn’t work. But sometimes I’ll watch a movie and it seems like it didn’t work but then after I think about it a little while, it clicks into place and I can see what they were doing. This movie might be one of those.

Got it, thank you.

Trancers 1984 Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt

Watched on Peacock. I think it’s been reformatted in High Def. I know the Blu Ray is 4k UHD.

The High Def does reveal some low budget sets and graphics. But I think its an improvement.

Trancers is my guilty pleasure. Who couldn’t love a police character named Jack Deth? Only the weak minded squibs can be turned into Trancers.

I think this was Helen Hunt’s first movie. She did tv before Trancers.

Back on a track kick. Some insane real crash footage from the past. Popcorn

I think so too. I’ve read Matheson’s novella “I Am Legend” many times, and “Last Man on Earth,” shot in Black & White and largely narrated by Vincent Price, really captures the grim horror of Robert Neville’s day-to-day existence. Some of the dubbing is not so good but Price is perfect. The man’s weariness shows on his face in every scene. “The Omega Man” with Charlton Heston is awful. The Will Smith version was forgettable too. They both stray too far from the original story, in my opinion.

Wow, didn’t realize they cleaned that movie up. I saw it elsewhere in its standard def. I ended up watching all six(6!!) of them as well. It’s honestly not a bad series, though the final one is pathetic.

Maybe the best movie Charles Brand has made? Not saying much, but Trancers feels a movie.

Helen Hunt was famous by the third one and she had such a good experience, she insisted on coming back for a brief cameo. Good for her.
