Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

Thanks for the replies. I think we’ll pass.

Finished off all nine of the Jesse Stone movies. I have way too much time on my hands.

I just watched The Marvels-it was okay, not bad, I dont know what the fanboys hated it.

A couple things annoyed me- Danvers is more powerful than any superhero ever- why is she still punching away? And the whole Kree-Skrull thing, I know Marvel wants us to care about it, but unless you are//were a dedicated reader, it is just kinda confusing- but Danvers did screw up their world, and just left.

By the way- is that ocean world getting its water back? And when the Skrull army landed the Aladnans still use melee weapons? There are several times in some of these superhero films where a good old tommygun would totally rule.

And- lots of worlds have lost of water- why did Danvers correctly guess Aladna? Note- the Earth is 70% water.

But still,many fun scenes.

My family really liked it. It was overly criticised quite a bit.

Re-watched Mystery Men. A great movie for when I’m tired and bored. From 1999 and still holds up if you can get by “Hey now, you’re an all star …”

I still do quotes and such from it. Will quote again. “OK, now I’m going back to graduate school. That was the agreement.” " Do we all gather together, and go kick some Casanova butt? Or do I eat this sandwich ?"

Watched the background stuff in some scenes and noticed some nice touches. E.g., during the first fight scene there’s three old dudes just standing there holding their drinks while mayhem goes on two feet from them.

Rush is great for over the top stuff like this. Lena Olin is wasted.

Time for a sequel?

They did a Superhero parody film right. The Heroes are still heroes.

Strangers on a Train

Excellent. Only Hitchcock could make a merry-go-round scary.

The Shootist. A kinda sad final John Wayne film, with superb casting and acting.

A few quick reviews.

The Wild Robot

Excellent. Not as good as Mitchells Vs. Machines, but one of the best animated movies since. Reminded me of a good Miyazaki movie.

Apartment 7A

Adequate, but not memorable. Streams on Paramount +, which I just get as part of Walmart +. I don’t regret seeing it, but no big impact.

Mars Express

Disappointing. I’d heard great things. It was honestly very dull.

YiYi. A Taiwanese film from 2000, and the inspiration for Lulu Wong’s The Farewell. Long and slow paced, but fascinating. Great performances from all the cast.

Megalopolis

This is what happens when you self-finance your own $100 million movie with no one to tell you no.

Grandiose, audacious, ponderous, confusing metaphorical nonsense that really believes It Is Saying Something Important. It’s quite the experience and really has to be seen to be believed. It’s bad but in a trainwreck cannot-look-away way. I’m still glad I saw it even though I don’t think it worked.

Francis Ford Coppola did make a surprise appearance at my theater to introduce the film so that was cool!

Wolfs

Brad Pitt and George Clooney are “fixers” of the criminal type who end up independently getting assigned to the same job. A lot of goofy twists ensue to create a fairly decent movie. Note that it has the usual gangster guys doing a bunch of gangster stuff but it’s basically an action (non-)buddy comedy.

I don’t get the poor audience reaction. E.g. at RT it’s 69% critics but only 54% audience.

It is somewhat quotable, just not at the level of The Big Lebowski, for example. “I know how to get to Chinatown!”

Give it 3.5 Black BMWs.

Is it very violent? We might watch it, but my wife doesn’t care for too much violence.

My Old Ass. A young woman, with the aid of hallucinogens, has an encounter with the 39-year-old version of herself (Aubrey Plaza).

I had low expectations (it was my wife’s choice)…but I loved it. Highly recommended.

Yeah, Wolfs has some violence. Not heavily peppered with it but there is one scene … .

Re: Wolfs

We watched it last night. I don’t get the hate either. It’s not a great movie, and it’s fairly predictable, but it’s an evening’s entertainment and we got what we expected: A “buddy movie” (or perhaps an anti-buddy movie) with a couple of big stars chewing the scenery and probably enjoying themselves quite a bit in the process. It’s not played like a spoof. Pitt and Clooney clearly are playing it straight, which is what makes it work. I’d give it 3 stars out of 5.

I watched The Princess starring Joey King. John Wick / The Raid action in a mediaeval setting. It’s a good way to waste a couple of hours, I really enjoyed it.

Watched this last night affer your recommendation. An incredible feat, honestly mind-bending to think he climbed up that with nothing more than a bit of chalk (forgive me if the technical name is something else!) and some rubber shoes.

The man himself… well, I guess in order to scale something vertical without any safety backup whatsoever, you have to be so laid-back as to be completely horizontal. The brain scan showing he basically does not fear anything made perfect sense.

I had a little “cheesy horror movies I saw as a kid on Sinister Cinema and Elvira” film fest, courtesy of Tubi.
Such Classics as Hatchet for the Honeymoon, Night of the Sorcerers, A Bell from Hell, and the one that made such an impression I couldn’t bring myself to watch it for 40 years - Death smiles on a Murderer. Though they’re all incredibly dated and in no way scary to me now, I still got a thrill reminiscing how me and my bff would watch every Sunday afternoon, sitting on my living room couch and clung unto each other, occasionally covering our eyes. I totally recommend all (except for Bell from Hell; that has a horrendous scene at a slaughterhouse that I can’t believe I forgot about. blecch) if you’re one who enjoyed that kind of stuff back in the day. Next up, Dementia 13 and Dunwich Horror.

The Cutter 2005 Chuck Norris, Joanna Pacula, Bernie Kopell

It’s an inusual action drama with many Jewish characters and connections to the Holocaust.

Its the first time I’ve seen Bernie Kopell in a dramatic role.

It’s very slow paced and unusual for Chuck Norris. It’s not his typical action film.

Kopell is an old diamond cutter that survived Auschwitz. He’s kidnapped to work for a Nazi again.
I’d give it 2 stars. It should be much better with this cast.
