Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

I’ll look for it. Thanks.

Was revenge a common theme in these stories/movies? Just curious.

Yeah, that was really the worst. She goes from captive to lover in about 30 seconds. Truly cringe-worthy.

I mean, that summarizes that movie exactly. I had read the book when I saw the movie, and the book was smarter, but I don’t recall the von Sydow character being as good in the book.

Moderately. it wasn’t an overpowering force. I can’t recall Conan starting into a story wanting to take revenge for past actions, but if someone wronged him in the course of a story he’d want to take revenge. To a barbarian, I guess, Revenge is a dish best served piping hot.

Conan was usually motivated by a search fo treasure, or by wanting to get out of the desert or whatever and find someplace better.

It’s worth mentioning that Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie “One Battle After Another” just landed on Metacritic with a 97 score and is at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. If that MC score sticks, there will only have been 3 films higher since 2000.

I wouldn’t have guessed that from the trailer, but it’s definitely getting some nominations based on that.

Most of the time, he was just wandering through a place when adventure fell into his lap.

The Conan of the original stories is very different from the Conan of the movie - chatty and flirtatious, full of bravado and braggadocio, albeit with a furious temper when angered. I love REH Conan and Milius Conan equally, as completely different people.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues

Somewhat recommended.

Cute, charming, I smiled watching it. Is it hilarious? No, not really. Are there some laughs? Yes. It is plenty enjoyable to see the group back and catch up on what they’ve been doing.

It serves as a neat little follow-up, but doesn’t work on its own.

Nope, the whole scenario is completely unrealistic, though I admit I’m bugged by scientifically or factually implausible scenarios. First of all, there’s no way a Mars return sample would be sent to the ISS, rather than being sent to earth where it could be properly analyzed. If the ISS was just a convenient transit point before being brought to the surface, the sample would certainly not be opened. And if any sign of alien life was detected, the amount of study and research that would be applied to the sample would require a full-scale biosciences research facility like this . Good luck fitting all 12 floors of this huge building and all its equipment and personnel into a space station! For potential biohazards, we know how to create secure BSL-4 containment labs.

Another flaw in the story is the discussion of using the ISS thrusters to send it into “deep space”, and later discussing doing the same with a lifeboat. As if being in earth orbit means you can now go anywhere in the universe! The ISS is in low earth orbit. Neither the ISS nor any of the docked spacecraft have anywhere near enough fuel to even send it to a significantly higher orbit, let alone to reach escape velocity. Reaching actual deep space by escaping the solar system entirely requires even more energy.

If the counteargument is “it’s just a movie”, I have more respect for films like Interstellar and 2001: A Space Odyssey that at least make an effort to get most of the basic science right.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on Prime. In honor of Mr. Redford. You know the premise: the outlaw duo on the run from the law. Recommended.

The Long Walk
An extremely well written and acted punch to the gut. This as close as I’ve come to being traumatized by a film in decades. It’s a good film, but certainly not a fun one.

I really enjoyed this movie. I grew up in a (half) Italian household in Queens, and this movie’s characters were so reminiscent of the real life characters I grew up with. It was very well done.

Cool Runnings on Disney Plus.

Recommended.

A funny, inspiring sports film based on the true story of Jamaica’s first Winter Olympics delegation - the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team. It’s got that Disney heart.

Oh, yeah, man. This one holds up completely. I used to show it at school to my students as a reward and I’ve shown it to my kids.

Laughs and cheers. Fun movie.

“How 'bout I draw a line down your head to make it look like a butt!”

“I see pride! I see power! I see a bad ass mother who ain’t gonna take no crap off of nobody!”

“Oh, pardon me! I didn’t realize four black guys in a bobsled could make you blush.”

The whole scene where John Candy castigates the Olympic Committee to let the Jamaicans compete is one of the best scenes in Candy’s career.

“Remember, bones don’t break in a bobsled accident. No, no…they shatter!”

Axis Sally was very good despite negative reviews. Pacino of course is a force of nature. True story.

My fav folk artist, same nearly the same age as me and we sort of went through the stages of life in parallel. Amazing writer …he was called “the folksingers folksinger”.

Amazon gave me three free months of unlimited and using them to access his albums…for reasons unknown Alexa cannot connect with him when I ask but I can get the music in the app.

That movie was very good - excellent cast, a true - gripping story. The lead - a pro catcher is a polymath with multiple languages and goes toe to toe with Hiesenberg in Switzerland and determines the premiere German phyicists fate….very surprising and engaging movie all the better as it’s true. √
