Definitely, it doesn’t come close to standing up on its own, but it was a nice way to check back in with the boys.
One more on 2001:
All the “Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite” stuff. All the slit-scan imagery, the infrared landscapes - is this what Bowman is seeing outside the pod, or is it just pretty metaphysical imagery that symbolizes anything but means nothing?
I can’t speak for what Kubrick may have meant, but based on Arthur Clarke’s novelization, I believe that this is what Bowman is literally supposed to be seeing.
In the novel, the giant monolith at Saturn (Jupiter, in the movie) that Bowman encounters is a device that creates wormholes to allow space travel across vast distances. Bowman’s inner monologue in the narrative talks of his seeing other alien craft while on the journey.
I prefer Mad Magazine’s explanation that he crashed through the 105-story Jupiter Museum of Op Art.
One Battle After Another
I saw it on 70 mm, which was a treat (it was filmed in VistaVision which is the way Paul Thomas Anderson wanted it seen, but I think there are only 3 theaters in the world showing it in that format, so 70 mm was a good second option).
Despite being based on a book from 1990, it feels very timely, which is part of the point of the title. The acting is sensational - Leo will probably get a best actor nomination, and Penn is probably a shoe-in to win best supporting. It’s an odd mix of black humor, action, and political and social commentary that somehow all works together.
It’s almost three hours long, but never felt like it. I was fully engaged start to finish.
There are four! One is near me and a bunch of my friends are going, but I don’t really like going into town so much anymore.
That’s worth going into town for! Have fun.
Where are those four? I just checked about where it’s showing in VistaVision. It appears it’s only showing in VistaVision at Regal Union Square 17 in New York City, Vista Theater in Los Angeles, and Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London. What’s the fourth one?
Coolidge Corner, Boston.
Thank you.
Saw it last night in IMAX 70mm and thought it was outstanding! Probably my #1 of the year so far.
I saw One Battle After Another today in Cinemark XD (a poor man’s IMAX). It was great and seemed very timely, though some of that was coincidental.
I just noticed that there is yet another Karate Kid movie called Karate Kid Legends. It’s on NFLX. Jackie Chan is in it and apparently Ralph Macchio appears at some point. I’ve started it and it’s not bad.
I just hope it’s better than Cobra Kai towards the end. That started as so much fun but the final couple of years were just dire.
Pretty much the same formula as all the rest of them.
I just saw One Battle After Another. Not sure what to think about the story, but it was certainly very well done and it really held my attention.
“I prefer brown M&Ms.” “I prefer red M&Ms”.
FIGHT.
One Battle After Another
Very much recommended.
I had no idea this movie would be so funny. I genuinely found myself laughing through the middle section of this movie, which ends up being a comedy…of sorts.
I’ve heard nothing but raves about this movie and while I don’t hold it quite the high esteem others do, it is really good. Like, a very impressive movie. It’s so nice to see original stories(it is loosely…very loosely based on a novel, though).
I predict a Best Picture nomination, if not a win. And Leonardo DiCaprio may also get a win. He’s really good in the movie. Even Sean Penn does a great job in a supporting role.
Go in mainly blind. Wouldn’t even read a summary. Fun movie, check it out.
