Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

Roofman with Channing Tatum. The true story of an escaped convict who lived inside a Toys R Us for months while hiding from the police.

Well done movie, he’s excellent in the role, and the whole story has me saying “why would you do that?” You’re a fugitive secretly living in a toy store, it’s maybe not the best time to get a serious girlfriend with two teen daughters. It made me think of a slow motion trainwreck, you knew it wouldn’t end well. Good watch.

It would have benefited by cutting 10 minutes from the middle. Cutting it from 102 minutes to 90.

The plot moves slowly by todays standards.

The drive-in date and wedding plan were distracting and delayed the action payoff at the end of the movie.

For anyone interested in learning a bit more about Hitchcock’s films and their themes, this is a great place to start…

Watched Play Dirty on Amazon Prime. What dreck. Almost turned it off after the first 15 minutes but slogged through it like watching a car accident. Not recommended.

The Thing 1982 Kurt Russell

I’m steadily working my way through the seasonal horror films.

The Thing is pretty good. Psychological horror isn’t really my Thing. It is interesting to see paranoia immediately envelop an entire group of people.

The sporadic shots of the alien are very well done. Carpenter did a excellent job directing the film. The pacing and buildup of suspense are timed well.

I usually watch it in October. I recommend it.

John Candy: I Like Me, a new documentary on Amazon Prime.

A poignant and ultimately very sad look back at the great comedic actor’s life and death. Highly recommended for fans - and if you aren’t one, you probably will be after watching this.

My husband and I watched it this weekend. We really liked it. He seemed like he was a good guy. The way they found him dead really hit me. I had never heard about that before.

If only the TV animated series had been made. Love the theme music. I think it would have been a wonderful show for young, impressionable children:

“This opening sequence is all that remains of the ill fated 1991 pilot. Adapted for the screen by long time shlock director, Dennis Feinstein. Initial studio reactions were so bad it was shelved and then very quickly destroyed in the 1994 studio preservation vault fire.”

One Battle After Another
Nice mix of farce and social commentary with some excellent performances. DiCaprio is really good at playing broken but sympathetic characters in a way that is as funny as it is heartbreaking. Sean Penn is good but as a rather cartoonish character. Benicio del Toro is the coolest guy in movies these days.

His fury on the phone for the guy strictly following the policies was hilarious.

“The answer was: time doesn’t really exist for you and me…”

Leo losing it over that hippie-dippy answer was great.

Funnier than expected.

For me, that phone conversation was the highlight of the film. It also shows that the resistance can be just as ridiculous as the oppressors (AKA The Christmas Adventurers Club)

Tron: Ares

Uh…recommended.

So, uh, this was poorly received? I liked this movie quite a bit, much more than I expected to. I did not like the original Tron(booooooooring). Tron: Legacy? I guess it was fine, but it made little big impact to me.

This one? I liked it a lot. Yes, these ideas were done better in other movies. I, Robot. Blade Runner. Uh, Blade Runner 2049.

Apparently, Jared Leto is a really bad guy and they just keep ignoring it. I set it aside, as I don’t know the truth, and watched the movie as it was. I liked it a lot. He’s good in it, as are the rest of the cast.

I presume they were hoping for him to lead a Tron 4 as well. I am guessing based on box office that they won’t be making that movie.

Best of the 3 Tron movies. Yep, I said it.

Well, I didn’t exactly watch them, as 80s movies are really crap. Tried to watch some crap called Southern Comfort and Escape From New York, both from 1981. Compared to today’s special effects and every other measure of movie-making, including acting, these are really poorly done.

This one has a fun follow-up, its editing/dubbing in Iran (from Wikipedia):

In the late 1980s Iranian state TV IRIB broadcast the film, under the name “Operation Lagoon” (Amaliyate Mordab). The film was shortened to 95 minutes, and the story was changed. In the Iranian version, a group of US Army soldiers who opposed the Vietnam War are sent on a mission among man-hunters, equipped only with blanks. The soldiers are killed by man-hunters one after another as planned by US authorities. At the end, when the remaining two soldiers believe the US Army truck is coming to save them, the picture fades and the sound of constant shooting is heard, indicating the US authorities killed all the soldiers. The film was a huge hit among the Iranian audience. Iranian film critics believed that the IRIB censored version made more sense considering the American government’s atrocities overseas.

It has the Balfa Brothers in it! Those few minutes alone raise it to the level of at least mediocre! Also Powers Booth isn’t evil in this one! Well, technically. I mean, mostly - there is the stabbing. Still looks evil, though - can’t help that. He’s got a severe case of villain-face.

It also has Perfect Tommy in a major role!

I mean, the 80s aren’t our best or worst decade for movies. We got:

  • Empire and Return of the Jedi
  • 3 Indiana Jones movies. I don’t love Temple of Doom…but still
  • Highlander
  • The Terminator
  • Aliens

Quite a few more, I’m sure. Crap came out, but it was a solid step forward for movies as well.

And Ghostbusters.

And Beetlejuice

We can keep going…and Batman.

And Die Hard.

And Clue…and Princess Bride.

And Out of Africa(just kidding, this movie SUCKS!)
