Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

Ahem.

Public lib’ary is still my best source for all manner of films & TV on DVD. Usually have 2wait a bit for new ones but it’s 100% free & I get them for 7-21 days with renewal option. Currently re-watching ‘‘The Sopranos’’ Season 5 & ''Mary Tyler Moore Show ‘’ Season 3.
Also Led Zep’s “The Song Remains The Same” 2001 re-master!

I just rewatched The Sixth Sense for the first time since we saw it in the theater. It really is well done, better than I remembered after all the memes and references kind of degraded it in my memory, and I was fifteen minutes in before I even realized that Cole’s mom was played by the magnificent Toni Collette.

I’m really glad I happened to scroll HBO and see it starting.

I rewatched Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home for the first time probably sense I saw it in the theaters. It is such a fun movie. It may well now be my favorite of the Trek movies.

“No, I’m from Iowa….I only work in outer space” may be one of the best movie lines of all time.

Oh, wait. This movie, about a PARENT in a TRAP, featured Hayley Mills (as the FBI profiler). I think I have to go back up to 40, certainly that’s worth five points of credit.

Yes, it’s a joke, though M. Night has said he just casts interesting people.

It’s Hayley Mills in a movie…to Trap a Parent.

I saw this yesterday, after noticing it was available on Hulu. Normally I avoid horror movies and almost never see them in the theater but am willing to see a few at home. It was good.

Frankie Freako

Somewhat recommended.

This is the next movie from the creators of Psycho Goreman. This is probably the weakest movie of theirs, but still a very fun and kind of bizarre film in its own right. I would call this a family film, but then in some parts it is quite inappropriate, so I’m not sure what the idea was.

It’s cute. A guy calls a hot-line to have more fun and a bunch of puppet monsters come and kind of ruin his house and are way too wild for him.

I watch Redlettermedia’s Youtube channel and this movie features Rich Evans, Mike Stoklaska, and Jay Bauman in voice roles. It isn’t their movie at all. It’s a movie they are hired to be in.

It’s fun. Cute.

Just back from Venom: The Last Dance. It’s a pretty good entry to the franchise - the usual comedy, Tom Hardy slapstick, and CGI blobfights the first two films had. If you liked those, you’ll like this. If you didn’t like those, why the hell are you watching a third one?

Everything has to be taken with a very large grain of salt, but it’s a fun ride for all that. And Chekhov’s gun makes a giant blinking neon sign of an appearance early on, so I hope no one was hoping for a clever twist at the end.

Weird to see Juno Temple (late of Ted Lasso) with a rather strident and not entirely convincing American accent, but nice to see her getting work, I guess. Rhys Ifans likewise trots out his American skills.

There is a mid-credits scene setting up whatever is next in the franchise (featuring Andy Serkis CGI’d into unrecognizability) and an end-credits scene that does likewise.

The Remarkable Life of Ibelin

Highly recommended.

A documentary about a disabled boy, who died in 2014, and the secret life he hid from his family. That life? His World of Warcraft life, where he had friends, girlfriends, and was seen as a great guy and leader.

As his disability worsened, he spent 20,000 or so hours on WoW and built many relationships there, all while mainly hiding he was disabled from the online community.

When he died, waves upon waves of online friends reached out to his family and they gradually learned all the impact he had made on many people in the game.

Great documentary. I haven’t seen too many docs this year, but this is a great one.

Check it out. Streams on Netflix.

I know a few of you have already mentioned Longlegs

My favorite, too.

Whoa, that was weird. Anyway, Nic Cage I fabulously freaky and whatever’s up with Maika Monroe’s character, she nailed it. Heck, everyone’s performance was good and the atmosphere was sufficiently creepy. Unfortunately I can’t make heads or tails of the story. Pretty disappointing.

The story to Longlegs is confusing? First I’ve heard. Weird, yes. Easy to follow…also yes.

Jeepers Creepers 2001

Brother and Sister returning home from college are relentlessly chased by the Creeper.

It’s the first film in the franchise. I kind of enjoyed it. Some of the long, high-speed, driving scenes were annoying. They’re fleeing from the Creeper but we only see two teens excitedly talking as they drive.

Gina Philips and Justin Long had a lot of dialog together. Must of been difficult work.

Eileen Brennan has a short appearance as the feisty cat lady.

The movie was on AMC today. Watch it sometime when you need to kill time.

American accent seems to be her default position, and I had to go back to question whether she was actually British (she is), because I’ve seen her in a few things since Ted Lasso, and lead in Fargo last season was up with the rest of the (admitted unusual) Minnesota accents. But seen her in things like Lost Transmissions (with Simon Pegg also doing American), Unsane and Wonder wheel, and apparently (and I’ve not seen it recently, so wouldn’t have known her), Sin City: A dame to kill for.

Christine 1983 Keith Gordon, Dean Stockwell

My favorite Stephen King film. The iconic 80’s cast isn’t familar to many younger people today. Alexandra Paul is remembered for Baywatch.

Great soundtrack.

The physical effects and camera shots in the car crusher are very good.

This movie still gets referenced by Youtube car guys whenever they’re restoring a fifties car. Don’t Kill Me Christine.

Venom: Last Dance

Somewhat recommended.

If you did not like Venom 1 or 2, skip this one. It’s actually probably the worst of the three, but having enjoyed 1 and 2, I enjoyed this one as well.

How strange that we got Venom movies and they are basically comedies, like actually buddy copy comedies where both buddies share the same body.

This had a weaker plot and 1 and 2, but it did wrap up the Eddie Brock and Venom storyline, which is actually nice to see once in awhile. I don’t think a Venom 4 is in the works and it really shouldn’t be. These were, to me, very unique and I have not read all of the comic book Venom stuff, so I figured Venom was mainly a monstrous, gooey, villain. These movies turned Venom into a goofy sidekick of sorts. I wonder if there are Venom fans out there that hated this interpretation.

Anyway, fun little movie, though mainly forgettable. While worse than 1 and 2, all three are only cute at best and this one isn’t that much worse.

Again, if you liked Venom 1 and 2, see this. It wraps stuff adequately.

I didn’t express that quite right. It’s not that I don’t understand the premise, just that to me, it wasn’t told in an effective way; the random pieces don’t fit together well. At the end, when the mother is telling the story, I kept thinking “wait, when did they show us that?”
I enjoyed watching it, just don’t think it’s what I’d call a smart movie (I’m not in any way suggesting those who like it are not smart).
