Saw new release, Conclave, in a theater. It’s a fictional account of selecting a new pope and political maneuvering by the sequestered cardinals. Rated at 93% on RotTom. Ralph Fiennes, Kim Tucci, Lithgow.
Very good movie. I’m nonreligious, but think it could be enjoyed by liberal Catholics and most other theists. The cardinals have a raft of human failings. At the beginning I wondered if the film could include enough female characters to satisfy modern tastes, and yes there were some small but important parts for women.
Bite your tongue. It is certainly much tamer in the context of today’s culture than it was in the 1970’s, but it’s still raunchy, camp fun and every damn song is a banger.
The Young Frankenstein talk is timely since Terri Garr passed away yesterday.
“What knockers!”
“Why, thank you, Doctor.”
Re: Keith Gordon, I found his screen presence a little off-putting (especially cringe in Back to School with the great Rodney Dangerfield at his wise-cracking best) but the man has been an extremely competent director.
Woman of the Hour (Netflix, 2024) Directed by and staring Anna Kendrick. It’s an Anna Kendrick vibe, if you like her you’ll likely enjoy this. Kendrick plays a potential victim during a dating show which happens to be hosting one contestant that turned out to be a notorious serial killer. The film is really a disjointed series of vignettes about the victims, but it is all brought to a satisfactory conclusion. It was alright, I wouldn’t see it again, but it wasn’t a waste of my time.
My best recent experience was seeing it a few years ago at an outdoor theater. (yes, there are a few still out there). My son and I were yelling out a lot of the call outs, and got a lot of laughter out of the virgins. At the outdoor, throwing things wasn’t a problem.
To give credit where it’s due; it’s a difficult task to portray rape in a way that it can’t be exploitive (that is: porn for the rapists in the audience). Anna Kendrick has threaded that needle with praiseworthy skill.
Fun. I somehow had never seen it. It actually goes pretty far for a movie in the 1970’s and the songs are fun. The whole thing is very bizarre and I definitely see how it gained a strong following.
So Frank-N-Furter…is an alien? Is that the direction the plot went?
Great soundtrack, Tim Curry is not surprisingly very excellent.
The Fog 1980 Adrienne Jo Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis
The camera work and effects help sell this movie. Creating an ominous atmosphere when the fog arrives.
Some of the performances are weak. I usually like Hal Holbrook. He was completely miscast as a priest. Father Malone is a descendant of one of the conspirators. Other than stating concern, for the crime there was nothing in his demeanor that shows concern or shame.
I like the movie and its worth watching during this Halloween season.
Jamie Lee has a great line, strange things seem to happen to me. Nice comment on her horror films.
Wikipedia mentions that several cast members from Fog are in Escape From New York.
In the late 80’s I worked in Michigan for a while. At work I listened to a top 40’s station and there was an interview with Curry who was in town as part of a road show for a revival of 42nd Street One thing he said was that no matter what movie or play or whatever he was in, the first thing an interviewer would ask about was Rocky Horror.
