Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

The Scapegoat (1959) A youngish Alec Guinness plays a sort-of double role. For some inexplicable reason it is set in France, but with no French actors and no one attempting to act French.

That quibble aside, an enjoyable watch with some twists. I felt the ending was intentionally vague enough that one could choose whichever outcome they prefer.

I enjoyed La Jetee a lot when I first saw it in high school. It really packed a punch for me. When I saw Twelve Monkeys much later, I enjoyed it for what it was, but it was similar to me how the impact of the short story Flowers for Algernon was attenuated in the full length feature movie Charly.

Some things are getter shorter.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come

Recommended.

Not as good as the first one, but very fun and so well made and acted. I won’t spoil how they get Samara Weaving back into the “hide and seek” game, but it made about as much sense as you can considering the first one did not plan for a sequel.

Big cast, lots of fun performances.

I rather liked the ending and how they worked stuff out.

100% useless without the first one. Make sure you seek that out and see it first. A direct sequel, picks up the moment the last one ends.

Escape from New York (1981).

Totally holds up. Great flick.

I feel like a broken record, but for the love of pete, can people please remember to note where they are watching these movies?? It’s sooooooo easy and would save those of us who might be interested in watching them time and bother googling around. Thanks in advance.

Slapface

Not recommended.

Uh…no. Kid has a witch-friend who arrives…after he plays slap-face with a brother…where they slap each other in the face. The witch kills everyone he cares about. This is a movie.

Skip it. Very dull.

(Hoopla)

Flight Risk on HBO. Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Dockery. A different character for Wahlberg, who does a good job of being a psychopathic killer. Dockery is an agent who is transporting a criminal (Topher Grace) from northern Alaska to Anchorage via a single engine small plane. Her pilot turns out to be a Bad Guy who she has to tangle with to get control of the plane. I liked it, surprisingly.

Agreed. I posted upthread about this movie. Not a great show, but surprisingly entertaining.

Please, guys, be careful with spoilers.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard 2017 stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Salma Hayek.

Excellent cast.

On Max

Reynolds is known for playing Deadpool.

In this film, Michael Bryce (Reynolds) must protect Darius Kincaid (Jackson), an imprisoned hitman on his way to testify at the International Criminal Court against a sadistic Eastern European dictator Vladislav Dukhovich (Oldman).

I got quite a surprise. This is a very good film with just enough humor to break up the endless action scenes.

Samuel L. Jackson is at his best playing the loud and boisterous hitman. He’s using the Pulp Fiction, high-pitched, self-righteous voice. I half-expected Jackson to quote Scripture.

I Recommend watching.

The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming 1966

I saw it about 50 when it was on TV and didn’t remember anything about it. I really enjoyed it and loved how things just kept escalating. For me it’s held up, but for younger folks who didn’t grow up during the Cold War, it may not. Also, it’s fun seeing all the familiar old faces show up that we grew up with in the 60s and 70s.

Fun trivia: Brian Keith was fluent in Russian.

Cool. Then, he should have corrected the accents of some of those “Russian” submariners. Theodore Bikel and Alan Arkin were both very good, but the one guy who’s talking about the malchik Johnny Whitaker when he’s hanging off the church steeple had an abysmal accent.

I saw it in the theater when it first came out. I was nine years old. One line had me laughing harder than I ever have since in a movie theater:

Whatcha doin’ hangin’ up there on the wall?

“Emergency! Everybody to get from street!!!” is my custom timer alarm sound.

The Rip

Recommended, for the most part.

Cops, money, dirty cops, murder. An interesting movie about finding a huge stash of cash and what happens within the police department when this happens. It’s $20 million.

The last 45 minutes is excellent. Problem is, the hour before that feels like it needs to be trimmed down.

I wont’ spoil, but I will say I was wrong about who “was the bad guy” and so forth. The movie had me decently fooled.

Pretty good. I’ve heard it called “Good Snitch Hunting”. Oh, it stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

I love that line! I still use it! I think it’s the only line I laughed at in the whole movie, but it made it all worthwhile for me.

“Pretty Lethal”. All you have to know is that ballerinas have to fight their way out of a huge building full of mobsters. The story is forgettable, but the acting is decent, the fights are fun, and it has Uma Thurman in it (though she doesn’t fight at all  ).

Minority Report 2002 Tom Cruise, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, and Max von Sydow.

I struggled to get interested in the beginning of the movie. It was too futuristic for my taste. I liked the precogs and the “Precrime” police program. I found the methods of travel, the police weapons, the halo, and the futuristic setting frustrating. I wanted to better understand the complex conspiracy that ensnared Tom Cruise’s character. The futuristic setting is a distraction.

There were too many shiny details to absorb in the first twenty minutes of the film. I was reminded of Blade Runner which also has a conspiracy placed into a futuristic society.

I did get more interested as the story progressed. The conclusion of the film is very good.

I recommend the film. But, watch it in the evening when your less tired and drowsy. This film demands a lot of attention from the audience.

I loved that movie. On an incredibly tangential side note, Samantha Morton, who played pre-cog Agatha, did the voice of Ruby on “Max & Ruby” for more than a decade.
