The Phoenix Art Museum has this painting. I believe it inspired the art direction for the film. You can just see it!
I saw this as well. It was gripping but kind of a weird take on Robin Hood. The fight scenes were incredibly violent and bloody.
I love that film. So darn entertaining. Must’ve seen it 10 times.
I was entertained. 
That line is a great send-up of public spectacles like football, soccer, MMA, and Gladiators.
We watched this last night and it was ridiculous and enjoyable. Every time we see Margaret Qualley in a movie, my wife and I simultaneously mutter to the poor dope on the screen with her, “Run!”.
People that liked Gladiator should watch Spartacus. Made in 1960 with Kurt Douglas.
Spartacus was a slave and a gladiator that lead an uprising. It’s loosely based on a historical figure.
It’s similar to what the Roman General planned in Gladiator. Except his escape attempt was unsuccessful.
Spartacus also spawned a Meme.

I have a great fondness for Moon, possibly because Rockwell wasn’t so maniacal.
Sam Rockwell is also great in JoJo Rabbit, which I highly recommend. It’s one of my favorite movies.
I know it got a lukewarm response but I very much enjoy See How They Run. Rockwell is the opposite of manic, with he playing a weary detective and Saoirse Roanon playing a detective-in-training in 1950s London.
This was a very silly movie and we enjoyed it greatly.

1934’s It Happened One Night, the Clark Gable classic. Saw it at a special screening at a theater.
Other than the inherent sexism of the day, it’s a pretty good movie.
Funny thing: you know how, if you’re an adult and never have seen Casablanca and you finally watch it, you’re like “I’ve seen this movie!” from all the parodies and homages? I’m watching IHON and I’m like “I’ve seen this movie, but in Bugs Bunny cartoons!”
So I read the Wikipedia article, and it seems it was Looney Tunes director Friz Freleng’s favorite movie, so yeah, I probably did. Not only that, possible Bugs himself was based on Gable’s character. Today I learned!
Night of the Comet. (1984) The earth passes through the tail of a comet, which causes most people to disintegrate or turn into zombies. Two teenage sisters survive and have adventures in a depopulated zombie infested LA, dealing with both sapient zombies and a sinister government organization. Fortunately their father was a Green Beret and taught them how to fight and use guns. The acting is atrocious in a very 80s way. I enjoyed it a lot. It features Robert Beltran, who went on to star in Star Trek Voyager. Joss Whedon has said it was an inspiration for Buffy. Note there is a use of a homophobic slur, more thoughtless than malicious, so if that’s a deal breaker this flick is not for you. But if you love low budget eighties sci-fi, it’s a must see.
The Maze Runner Trilogy. Highly contrived (but aren’t they all?) Dystopian YA trilogy. The action is good, there are characters to root for and to boo and hiss. Overall a good popcorn flick.
Coincidentally the sinister government organization in both these movies has exactly the same goals and methods.
I saw this just over a year ago and I enjoyed it but understanding the gonzo filming in LA brings a lot of character to the movie, imo. They had limited time and a limited budget and could only shoot in empty streets in very quick bursts. It did lead to the great improvised line “Daddy would have gotten us an Uzi” as well.
Masters of the Universe
Highly(and surprisingly) recommended.
I went in expecting an OK film. It frickin’ won me over. It’s a comedy! It’s a comedy! It’s comedy!
I said that three times because while the trailers showed some jokes, it did not make it clear that this is purely comedic. I laughed a lot more than I expected to. It’s jarring how funny it is and how aware everyone in the movie is about how silly this all is.
Loved it. It’s not easy to win me over, but by the last 45 minutes, I was smiling and cheering(internally).
Great, fun, highly recommended summer movie.
Two notes:
- It’s 140 minutes. Just realize it’s longer than most summer movies.
- Jared Leto plays Skeletor. I had no idea. I don’t know why they keep giving him work when he has a bad reputation, but they do. He’s great in the movie, really great. But I know some people are boycotting him, more or less.
Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger (2025). Sequel to Bank of Dave, this time Dave Fishwick, the founder of the Bank of Dave, goes after extortionate “payday loan” lenders who are basically loan sharks preying on the most vulnerable.
Like the first movie, it’s billed as “true-ish”, meaning a lot of this stuff really happened but a lot of embellishment was thrown in. Rated much lower than the original on IMDb, but I still enjoyed it, and frankly I think it should have been rated higher. I thought it was a sweet story well told with a satisfying ending. Recommended.
ETA: There are several brief appearances by Hugh Bonneville in a minor role as Sir Charles, looking noticeably older than his Lord Grantham character in Downton Abbey.
It certainly gave Dave a lot of credit for stuff he had little to do with. I don’t mean to belittle actual Dave who does appear to mean well, but the films should be taken with an entire salt mine’s worth.
Anyhoo: went to see Supergirl. It’s a fun mindless action romp. The plot is entirely predictable, I found Eve Ridley quite wooden, and the CGI isn’t all it ought to be, but Milly Alcock is great, there’s a fun Seth Rogen voice cameo, and one more thing:
Jason Momoa as Aquaman? Meh
Jason Momoa as Lobo? FUCK YES
Same here! Plus, I got to see a stage performance of Mousetrap the week before, which really added to the fun.
