I thought it was a lot of fun! It’s a love letter to old Hollywood and silent cinema. The montage of the minions going through many famous silent comedy iconic scenes was awesome.
I haven’t seen it, but based on what I’ve seen of the advertising, it looks as if someone wanted to make a cute, cuddly Lovecraft movie. With With Jim Henson’s Cthulhu Babies.

I was listening to NPR yesterday during which someone talked about Minions & Monsters and gave it a really good review. They mentioned the early parts, showing old Hollywood, which might amuse the grown-ups in the audience.
Freaks (2018). A young girl is forbidden to leave her house by her loving but paranoid father. He warns her that people will kill her. One day she has enough and leaves. Things happen. Lexy Kolker, who plays the girl, is excellent, especially considering she was nine at filming. She appears to be building a career, which I hope works out.
Possessor. A corporate assassin kills by taking over the body of someone close to her targets. She becomes less and less able to maintain control. Some body horror is involved. It’s directed by Brandon Cronenberg, son of David, and the apple did not fall far from the tree. Jennifer Jason Leigh is involved.
Biggest shock about that film - Bruce Dern was not only still alive in 2018, but he’s still alive now, and has done 38(!) films since Freaks.
Did you see the director’s cut of this film? It’s probably worth it for this one.

He turned 90 on June 4.
If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend Nebraska from 2013 with Dern.

I’ll admit this is a pet peeve of mine but I don’t like films set in the past made by people who have only a minimal regard for history. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920. Talking movies began being produced by studios in the late twenties. So why were there suffragettes around when talkies started? And flying saucers and robots and kaiju were a couple of decades after that.
It’s so annoying when movies get the history wrong about when kaiju and flying saucers appeared in reality.
I’m watching a movie about minions. I can accept fictional things being depicted as real. But I object to cultural phenomena from the fifties appearing alongside cultural phenomena from the twenties.

I love The Rocketeer. I can handle Howard Hughes inventing a rocket pack that defies the rules of science and engineering. OK, we’ll roll with that.
But if in the restaurant scene, Teddy Roosevelt showed up with Marlene Dietrich on his arm, that’s wrong. There are rules, dammit! Even in filmmaking.

Yeah, although… AFAICT, a film like The Rocketeer, despite its sci-fi aspects, is essentially trying to portray plausible alternate history. Namely, take a chronological and geographical focus point within the real historical record, tweak a couple of core events, and let the “what if” unspool naturally, without gratuitously changing anything that doesn’t follow from the specific deliberate revisions.
Minions and Monsters is… not that. It is not merely embracing the chaos of multiple conflicting anachronisms. It is leaping all over and frantically slobber-kissing the chaos of multiple conflicting anachronisms like an affection-starved Golden Retriever on speed.
