Saw the poster, half watched trailers and ads, assumed it was a stupid “ape-becomes-rockstar” movie, so last week. when my wife offered me this or "Complete Unknown " (the Bob Dylan bio pic) I chose Dylan. Then I read about Better Man, and found out…
Its a bio pic about Brittish pop star Robbie Williams. As an ugly American who hates pop music, did not know him. The whole “ape” thing was just how he sees himself as unworthy.
I enjoyed the movie. Early scenes really set up his family relationships; I thought they did a great job showing, well, he was a jerk (as were a number of people around him). I also liked how they would show him feeling inadequate- like he doesn’t belong on stage - by him seeing older versions of himself in the audience judging himself.
Overall, a good movie. Glad I went. I’m still glad I saw the Dylan movie first, but this was good.
Another A Real Pain watcher reporting in. Two cousins travel to Poland to see the Old Country of their Grandmother, learn about the Holocaust, etc.
The two leads are Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg who also directs, etc. I was hoping that at least Culkin would not be so Culkinish but no such luck. I gave up on Eisenberg stretching as an actor long ago.
The movie started right away with Chopin’s Nocturne which is very nice. But … they kept playing piano pieces one after another after another. During dialog ad nauseum. Absolutely drove us mad. I have no idea why someone would choose to damage a movie this way. Just 'cause something’s in the public domain doesn’t mean you have to use it.
Okay-ish story. Some parts are rather unrealistic.
The Fall Guy is what I usually call an evening’s mild entertainment. Mildly amusing, plot not especially gripping, plenty of action, clocks in at just about two hours. Since it’s about a stunt man, there were lot of great stunts, but perhaps too too many. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt were charming as ever, but I never really felt there was any chemistry between them. Enjoyable but forgettable.
The Mortuary Collection (2019). A young girl visits a mortuary in response to a “Help Wanted” sign, which mortuary turns out to be owned by a very creepy guy whose concept of life centers around stories.
Naturally, each story he tells turns into a horror short, though the theme of the mortuary itself runs strongly through the movie and is part of the big finale.
This appears to be an indie production as I’ve never heard of any of the cast or creative production staff, but they managed to pull off a decently entertaining flick that’s garnered some attention. I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it, but if it happens to come along and you like horror, it’s worth a look.
Just rented it on Prime. Dr No is in my top three Bond movies.
It’s the closest in the series to a classic espionage movie. It’s more restrained and focuses more on characters.
The other Bond films are big budget with over the top effects and villians. They’re fun to watch. Bond films are like a rollar coaster ride on film. Q’s gadgets are always a high point.
Fun fact, Ursula’s voice is dubbed. A lot of Bond’s leading ladies had strong European accents and were dubbed by Nikki van der Zyl.
Speaking of voice dubbing in Bond films, I was surprised to discover that the voice of Goldfinger himself (played by German actor Gert Frobe, whose command of the English language was limited) was dubbed by a British actor, Michael Collins. I never would have guessed. Why, if he could barely speak English, did they hire him to play the title character? His good looks?
In the German release, Frobe dubbed his own lines.
Please don’t tell me that’s not Gert singing “Chu-Chi Face” in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I just watched it tonight and he’s great as the Baron trying to off the Baroness. Probably the most twisted (and kinda sexy) scene ever in a children’s film.
I would argue that From Russia With Love is the best as a proper spy thriller, but I can see where you’re coming from in terms of the mystery around the title character.
Major League With the passing of Bob Uecker, I rewatched this classic comedy.
It holds up fairly well, though the creeping around after Renee Russo is not particularly acceptable these days.
I do have a beef with the basic plot line, though. The owner is trying to get attendance below 800k, so she can break the lease. This number must have been passed fairly early in the year if the team is good enough to vie for the pennant (Division title really, I guess). But, it’s portrayed that the team needs to win the tie breaker with the Yankees for something something to happen, but really any of the players who did well would be fine with or without that final win.
