Movies you've seen recently (Part 2)

You probably want to put this in the “Series You’re Watching…” thread. (And we’re watching Bookie and like it a lot.)

I know - I realized it after I posted it so I flagged it for the moderators to move it. I wasn’t able to delete it.

Thanks

If you prefer one about a guy who can whoosh stuff out of his butt, I can recommend Thunderpants. For a movie based entirely on one fart joke, it’s more entertaining than one might imagine. Also, keep an eye out for an early Keira Knightley cameo.

Watched I’m Totally Fine, which I thought would be a sci-fi movie. I mean, it sort of was. A woman has arranged a party for her friend, but the friend dies suddenly, and then reappears because an alien life form is using her body while it does a study of human beings. So they go ahead with the party plans, and the woman gets all kinds of closure and shit. It was mildly entertaining, although way more focused on relationships than aliens.

Noted. I have to pace myself on that kind of entertainment, but I’m certainly okay with it on occasion.

Companion (2025)

Somewhat recommended.

Go in blind, the movie has spoiler-points that are worth avoiding. Anyway, a pretty good movie, but not a great one. Four friends get together at a house and some bad things happen. Better to just seek it out yourself

Or not, it was only OK. Worth a stream some night, though.

Anyone else seen this one?

My daughter and her friend went to see it. They liked it but did not offer much in the way of details.

I saw it over the weekend. I enjoyed the ride. Sort of an Ex Machina crossed with Ready or Not. Plot holes the size the size of the Grand Canyon, though, so if you are the type that is bothered by such things, stay away.

Both much better than this movie.

Destination Tokyo 1943 Carey Grant, John Garfield, Alan Hale Sr.

Highly Recommend

It’s one of the earliest Submarine war films. Destination Tokyo is my favorite in that genre and one of Carey Grants best roles.

The film was a key recruiting tool for the submarine service. Carey Grant is a warm and personable skipper. The men have strong personalities and they shown as dedicated members of the Navy.

The story is very interesting. They going into Tokyo Bay to gather intel for the Doolittle Raid.

It’s on Max

Some Triva, Production used the USS Wahoo to familiarize themselves with submarine procedures and operations. The captain and crew talked with cast members. The USS Wahoo was lost at sea a few months afterwards with no survivors. Sunk by Japanese aircraft in October 1943.

Nitpick: Cary, not Carey.

I just watched that last week too. I’m a sucker for old submarine movies.

I really like Alan Hale. He always adds a lot to films. His son was good at comedy. The Skipper in Gilligan’s Island. I don’t believe he had the chops to play his dad’s dramatic roles.

I’ve often wondered if the medics on Subs really did surgery? The large Naval Convoys probably had at least a couple doctors available.

There was a interesting contradiction in Destination Tokyo. The cook donates his knives to be made into surgical instruments. Yet the crew performing the operation have full surgical gowns and masks. Pills has a procedure book and ether for anesthesia.

The only supply missing was surgical instruments. It was missing for dramatic effect.

I thought it worth mentioning, Warner Brothers has dropped a bunch of free movies onto their YouTube channel. It’s a strange mix of titles, but I see some I’ll check out.

Very smart, those are not big money-makers. I presume some kind of income will come there way from these dormant movies.

Yes, I’d guess they looked at a bunch of movies barely streaming on MAX & set up this new playlist as a test.

Critters 4 is the Alien ripoff with Angela Bassett in it. I remember thinking it was unexpectedly good.

Oh I didn’t know there was a Critters 4. Those movies aren’t good but they are fun. I’ll have to look ir up.

Now, one movie I LOVE on this list is The Wind and the Lion. Sure it’s inaccurate as the story is told but it’s got wonderful music and acting. I enjoyed when the Marine captain saluted and said “Yes sir!” when the Pasha said "Your president Roosevelt is mad "

Finally, I can watch a Pluto Nash and Deal of the Century double feature!

I am actually almost curious about Pluto Nash. Is it…I mean…it really that bad?
