Movin' to Greenville, NC...am I going to be the only Doper there?

Well, I recently found out that I will be doing my residency at the hospital in Greenville, NC for the next 3 years. I’ve been up to look around the neighborhoods and I drove around with a real estate agent for a while getting to know the area a little better.

So who else is there? Anyone know the area well enough to tell me the good places to eat, the good neighborhoods, special secrets you only know by living somewhere for a while?

Thanks

I went to school there! Are you going to be at the ECU hospital? I haven’t been there since 1989, so I don’t think I can be of any help about what’s around. I think I remember there being a Doper named ECUGrad. Don’t know whether s/he still posts or not…

Wow. I haven’t thought about Greenville (pronounced Greenvul) in a long time. Maybe I will email you in the future to find out what it is like nowadays. Hope you like pig barbecue.

I think Q.E.D. lives in Morehead or thereabouts (or was going to be at some point).

I’m a couple of hours way. Can’t say that I’ve hung around the area much as it’s pretty much a college town but from what I hear it’s party city. We’ll have to get an NC doperfest together soon.

I just visited Greenville for work and found it much more pleasant than I would have imagined. I could really see myself living there someday. I got screwed because I couldn’t get away from the obligatory work functions to have some barbecue.

Got relatives there, been there many times, but there’s nothing all that memorable about the town itself. You’ll find the usual Southern array of chain stores and Baptist churches and barbecue joints (pork only) and such. There’s a fair number of transplanted Yankees (like my relatives), so you won’t feel lonely either way. It’s a long drive from anywhere else - 2 hours to RDU or Norfolk, or even to the beaches (which are great, btw). The only way to fly there is on a US Airways Express turboprop from Charlotte, unfortunately. Being in low, flat country, Greenville tends to flood during hurricane season - Floyd had it shut down for 2 weeks.

The hospital itself is the town’s main attraction other than ECU (football and party school, mainly), serving as the primary advanced medical institution for all of eastern NC. I would think that’s a plum job for a doctor.

I’m not there anymore, but I worked at the hospital for 18 months. I liked it there, to the extent of wishing I was back there most days. If you don’t have a place to live already, I highly recommend the apartments across the street from the hospital. They were nice and an easy walk to work. Make sure you check out the BBQ place that is on the west side of town, down a little country road. I can’t remember the name, but any local can tell you how to get there. They cook a pig a day, and when that runs out, they close. It is the best BBQ I have ever eaten, and I have eaten my share.

Feel free to email if you want to ask specifics about the hospital. What is your residency in? I am a psychologist and I worked in rehab and in the oncology department.
