Moving a Budgie in the winter cold.

Scout will be accompanying me (eventually) to my new digs. I’ll be moving in officially the first week of February. Is it worth it to move him in such cold weather, or should I let him stay where he is now? Do I keep him in his cage with the cover over it? Do I put him in the type of box he came in? If it’s remotely risky, I’ll wait 'til it’s warmer, but I do want him with me ASAP.

I would keep him in his cage, wrap it well and warm up the vehicle you’re going to be transporting him up before you put him in. Don’t have the heater blowing directly on him, but make sure the car is nice and warm. Also make sure your new place is warm as well before you arrive.

Hope that helps!

And be careful about idling exhaust fumes – crack a window when you start moving, but probably have the window shut and vent (outside air) closed if you’re behind a lot of other cars in heavy traffic.

Generally, we just throw a blanket over the cage or travel carrier and whisk ours out to a warmed-up car as BaneSidhe suggests.

If it’s icy/snowy, perhaps use a small travel carrier – it’s easy to slip and drop a big unwieldy cage, and I wouldn’t want anything popping open. Flyaways are heartbreaking. Also consider using a bread tie or a clip or something to secure cage doors.

it’s not too scary if you prepare and if you stay alert for hazards. Best of luck in the new place!

Good advice, all. Then once he gets there, put him in his cage with food and water and leave him be for some time. He’s bound to be a bit stressed out so don’t add any stress to him.
