moving cross country

so on friday i decided to go to college across country
yesterday i bought my ticket for monday
any advice

Buy a cool sweater and enjoy the ride. Where are you moving to?

Do you have any stuff? Do you know how to get from the airport to where you’re going? Do you have a place to stay?

vermont
My whole life will more than likely fit into a single box
i have several couches i can crash on till i move into the dorms
i have people picking me up

Burlington?..

You bastard. I hate you. I really do.

Bring: Ski equipment, Bikes (mountain and road), hiking boots, passport for quick trips to Montreal.

Did I mention I hate you?..

ok. For dorms you will most likely need to provide your own (extralong twin) sheets. Usually local stores have these on sale around the beginning of school.

Assuming you have lived in California your whole life, you will need a heavy winter coat and some good snow boots. Hiking boots work, as long as they are waterproof, but salt is hell on them. Something with a ruberized lower section lasts longer. I have these in the girls version and I really like them. They lasted 7 consecutive Michigan winters and my toes were never cold or wet.

Polarfleece pullovers are also a very useful items for cheapness and utility (the Old Navy ones are just as good as any others)

Have a great year!

hopefully at college they will teach you how to use the shift key and punctuation marks

Congratulations on getting out of Davis.

oh i know how to use them. Unfortunatly for me my fingers can never remember

Don’t forget it also rains. A sturdy umbrella and some waterproof stuff will serve you well. There are ponchos that will fit over both you and your backpack.

Good point. A breathable rain jacket layered with a fleece is pretty much standard fall wear.

Something like this works well and doesn’t break the bank.

I think i’m good for fall/winter wear.

Wilsons leather jacket with thinsulate liner
full length duster/trench also with thinsulate liner.

I wear waterproof and skeel toe boots

Also i live about half my life in southern mass, so i have an idea what cold is like
and i lived seven years in fl so i nkow what rain is

Oh, ok. Living in a Michigan college town I was constantly suprised by what people didn’t know about bad weather. You sound like you’re good though.

A couple useful items for dorm rooms, if you have the spare cash:

  1. An area rug at least big enough to cover the space next to your bed (cold feet in the morning… ugh)
  2. A small coffee pot or electric kettle – for coffee, late night ramen, etc. (costs around $20)
  3. Flip flops to wear in the shower. An absolute necessity for hall showers, generally a worthwhile $2 investment for suite showers. (How often will you clean it, really?)

Well you probably won’t be exposed to this since you’ll be living and breathing the college environment, but I’ll say it anyway. I moved from California to Burlington a few years back and was rather shocked at the conservative, religious atmosphere there. Burlington is pretty liberal, but once you get out of it the rest of Vermont really isn’t and most work environments I came across were pretty conservative and christian. I was ostracized at a job because I didn’t go to the same church as the majority of people who worked there. Eventually I moved back to California, breathing a sigh of relief. It’s beautiful there, but I found the people colder than the weather in some ways.

i wouldn’t worry bout that, i take a distinct joy of putting conservatives on their ear, and i’m going to have a whole group of friends to help

I lived in Burlington, VT for about 14 years before I moved here. I still miss it terribly. Enjoy! Eat falafels at Ali-Baba’s. Have the nasty gravy fries from Nectars. Say hello to Lake Champlain from Battery park for me. Sigh.

Oh, and for winter just hit an Army/Navy store and pick up a Pea coat, a knit hat and some decent gloves. That pretty much what I had and I was always fine.
