I’m pretty sure there is a GQ here, but it might sound like an IMHO.
Anyway, are there jets people can rent to move house, like moving vans? I know it would be very expensive, but I’m sure some people would be able and willing to pay. Like if someone were to move from Florida to Alaska, where driving isn’t really an option if you have a lot of stuff, more than one vehicle, or a lot of pets.
I’m not talking about a whole 747 or something, but one of those smaller cargo planes. No other passengers, just a plane with your stuff on it.
How much would something like that cost? Is there a company currently doing this?
I know there are cheaper options, but I am curious about moving jets.
**Hard to say. Costs vary widely, and there’s no telling what size jet you would need. Something along the lines of a mid-to-large bizjet would be (very roughly) $3000 an hour or so.
**Almost any cargo company would be more than happy to help you out, but I don’t know of any that exist just for this purpose.
Now, if you are willing to go with a large turboprop rather than a jet, you can cut your costs by quite a bit. A large turboprop could be had for as low as $1500 an hour.
Note that these are very rough estimates. There are no standard rates for aircraft charter.
Talk to the Russians. The Antonov design bureau has kept itself afloat by hiring out its massive cargo planes for special jobs that can’t be done any other way. Don’t need something the size of a 747? They have something bigger.
On a more modest scale you can certainly contract an air freight company to haul your household goods but don’t count on it being very cost effective.
