Moving my thread to the Pit

Not by any means. Quite a few posters agreed with me, and others just came in to give me a hard time, without actually disagreeing with the idea.

Then, why move it? We have had posts dedicated to ridiculing a idea, etc before and not in the Pit, they have been in GD and IMHO.

Yeah, that’s true, and a blind squirrel still can find a nut once in a while.

But then, why not make insulting posters illegal there, too?

The thread description is:

IIUC you think those two functions shouldn’t go together in the same forum. But, as the SDMB is currently organized, and has been for a long time, they do.

I disagree with the first paragraph, but agree with the rest.

I think the Pit is a really stupid addition to this board. It’s juvenile and has no place in public discourse. No reason to go around insulting anyone and I haven’t participated in it in years.

But if I respond to an MPIMS or GD thread, then it gets moved to the Pit where others can take shots at me? Hey, I didn’t sign up for that. I posted in a thread with rules against that. But because a mod decided to move it, now I get flamed? (And even if I don’t read it, others can and it shows up in search results)

I disagree with moving any thread to the Pit.

An analogy (not a particularly good one, but I can’t think of any better) is where sometimes some people deliberately take what was meant as a private conversation between 2 individuals and then publish it on the Internet for everyone to see, so that dozens of trolls and brigaders can then go harass one of the individuals in question for the now-publicized messages. The texts or voicemails or whatever were made under one particular set of expectations, not the other.

You’re right that it’s not particularly good - every ordinary poster on this board can always see every other ordinary poster’s posts, regardless of which forum they’re posted in. There are no private conversations in threads.

I think I’ve read every Pit thread in the last few years, for precisely this reason. And the % of threads where people just pile on the OP is miniscule. Or so low that I think of it as "Here’s the forum where we make fun of those idiots out there."

If you start a thread and your first thought is “Oh, no, what if someone I don’t know says something unkind about me?”, well, you might not be tough enough to be on the world wide web.

Especially when you make a post specifically to make fun of a group of people, and your first post insults those people (brilliantly, I must add…*).

*Why am I being nice? He’s promised not to read the thread, and probably not this either (oooh, that’ll show us!).

Well, you’re wrong. Clearly the people that “haven’t participated in it in years” know more about the Pit than those of us that do read/participate.

CMC fnord!

This.

And this.

I don’t agree with the premise of your question. I don’t believe it was unambiguously a “Pit thread”. However, if I were limited to only those two options, I would definitely prefer the thread be closed.

I only unsubscribed from the other thread. I would actually not feel it was right to create a thread and then abandon it in short order if it was not moved.

And thanks for the compliment! Much appreciated.
