MP3 Organization

Windows shafted me. Thanks to defrag decideing to bluescreen I was forced to wipe my harddrive including all of my MP3s (over 9GB worth). Fortunately I still had everything on my iPod so I was able to copy them back onto my harddrive. The only problem is, there is no true Heirarchy to speak of on an iPod. Is there any software out there I can use to reorganize my files into folders based on Artist/Album. Something that uses the ID3 tags and places the files in respective folders? I have found programs that will sort your MP3s out but they only do it with a database for the program and don’t do any actual file moving. Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated.

PS. If any of you programmer types woudl want to write something I would gladly pay for the service.

This won’t actually move the files into new folders, but Windows Media Player does a good job of organizing your files if you tell it to scan the HD and add media to your Media Library. It uses ID3 tags.

iTunes has an option to ‘keep music organized’ or something under the advanced menu.

Are you on an Apple or a Wintell box?

Unfortunately I’m still on a Wintel box until my new Powerbook comes. Worst case scenario I can always just be careful not to sync the 'Pod until I can do something with iTunes. I just had some updates I had wanted to make but it can all wait until my new “toy” comes. Still, if anyone has any ideas or can write something it would be greaty appreciated.

Oh yeah, I’m running RedHat 7.3 as well so maybe there’s something I can do in there.

When you get your powerbook do not plug your ipod into it. This will take all of the mp3’s you have on your ipod and replace them with the ones in the iTunes library on your new powerbook. Unless you have already transfrered your mp3’s to your new Powerbook this will be an empty library. In other words, it will instantly erase all of the mp3’s you have on your ipod.

Ipods were designed specifically so they could not be used as a tool for transfering mp3’s from one computer to the next. There are ways around this, but first you have to set your ipod preferences to “manually manage” your ipod library. The only way I know of to set this preference is to plug your ipod into your powerbook so its a catch 22 at this point.

Unfortunately I cant help you with your problem beyond giving you that warning.

I already knew about that little problem with the iPod and before I did anything else I had plugged it into a Mac running iTunes back when I still had my full library stored on the Wintel box. If I remember correctly it asked me if I wanted to sync so I politely told it no and then it allowed me to use the 'Pod as a firewire disk, which would allow me to copy the files back over. Still doesn’t answer whether or not i’m in for a few long nights organizing 2000 MP3s or not though

go to www.ipodding.com for more information.

specifically look for an app called “ipod2mac”

oops, never mind, turns out that Apple’s Lawyers have put the head lock on any person/place/thing that supplies software to get songs from the iPod.

Doh!

They do have some linux apps though…
