MP3 Player Problem - hidden songs

I bought a cheap, crappy MP3 player, and since I washed my iPod, it’s become my only source of music at work. It’s a Sylvania 2 gig player with absolutely no bells and whistles (i.e. cheap and crappy). The problem is that somehow it is retaining the first bunch of songs I loaded onto it, but doesn’t show these songs in the song list, so I haven’t been able to delete them and put all new songs on. I see about 20 songs on the list, but there are a whole bunch more that aren’t showing up.

Any ideas on how to blitz the whole song list so I can replace all the songs, not just a small part? Oh yeah, I’m trying to do this with a Mac and iTunes.

I think iTunes is your problem. You may have to manage the files manually instead of through iTunes.

I doubt the Sylvania recognizes the format that iTunes uses to manage playlists et al. I don’t have a Mac, so take this with a grain of salt.

Attach the device using the USB cable and browse it as a drive. You’ll have to open your iTunes folders by browsing them and copying the folders from your Mac to the device. I suspect there is a MUSIC directory or somesuch on the device that all the music folders get put into.

look at the device with a file manager (Finder) just like a flash drive where you see files in folders, might also called the MSC mode for the device.

for your next quality mp3 player get a Sansa, they work great.

That’s what I’ve been doing - the files just aren’t there. My husband had a good idea - empty the garbage can after deleting all the files on the drive. We’ll see how that goes.

johnpost, I was just buying the cheapest one I could find as an add-on to my iPod - and I got what I paid for.

What you need is a low level format utility. This should work. http://hddguru.com/software/2006.04.12-HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool/

i don’t know if formatting the device with an external program would be a good thing, it might destroy a directory structure it needs.

I think your hubby is right… one does (well, i do on my Mac) need to empty the trash while the thumb drive/other media is connected for it to actually “erase” those files from the external source.

Yeah, if you want to reformat, look for software specifically designed to reset your device to factory defaults. Unfortunately, it’s probably Windows only, so, unless you have Windows on your Mac, you may have to use someone else’s PC.

At the very least, do a Ghost-style image backup of your device first, just in case reformatting doesn’t work.

I guess it might. I’ve done it on several cheap mp3 players, and so far no problems. I haven’t had a Sylvania tho, so disregard my advice.
