MP3-cd player technology is far from standardized at the moment. I was looking at them a month or so ago, so I can tell you the info is indeed on the 'net, but maybe not from the manufacturers. Go to a site that sells them, like bestbuy.com, goodguys.com, or circuitcity.com, and look for reviews of the players themselves. Usually at least one person mentions technical burning details in their review.
I own a RioVolt (portable cd/mp3 player). It can read subdirectories. I seem to recall that a coworker has a car system that can read them as well. Now that I think of it, my DVD/mp3 player does too.
So, yes, they can. But it’s probably a feature that isn’t on all mp3/cd players. So read up on the specs if you’re thinking of buying one.
My Aiwa CDC-MP3 car stero does. I’d guess they all probably do. Do your homework. Crutchfield.com is good too. I’m not sure if you are looking for a boombox, walkman or car but they have all 3.

I also own the Rio Volt (SP250…the black one). It reads multiple subdirectories. BTW…this thing ROCKS.
I have a CD MP3 player as well and it reads subdirectories. In fact I think most all of them do.
One thing they don’t all do (which is important so some people) is display text. If you are a person who relies heavily on selecting your music vs just playing whatever you have on a CD this is invaluable, but also costs more.
