MPAA head Jack Valenti passes away

From Bloomberg:

I’m no fan of Mr. Valenti, but there’s no denying that he was one of the most influential people in the movie industry during the latter half of the 20th century.

what?! those were the crappiest years!

So, will Mr Valenti’s death lead to any changes in the MPAA’s film [del]censorship[/del] ratings system?

Shit, looks like Ebert needs a new archenemy now.

Did he really die, or did he finally succumb to the Boston Strangler? More importantly, was it actually him or was it a copy? God forbid he should have made a copy of himself. That would be illegal.

Point of trivia, in case you didn’t know it – Valenti can be seen in that famous photo of Lyndon Johnson being sworn in on Air Force One after the Kennedy assassination. I think that’s him crouching on the left.

If I were just to say “good” would that be considered in bad taste? Oh well. Good. He should’ve died years ago, then maybe without his decrepit influence the rating system might have had the chance to be turned into something useful instead of being an arbitrary pile of shit.

But, my condolences to his loved ones.

Good.

You mean besides his own cancer-ravaged bod? I dunno… :dubious:

I have strong feelings agains the MPAA but I don’t really understand why people are saying his death was good. It’s not like the man raped puppies or anything.

Marc

Yeah. I saw him speak when I was a student at UT, and I just watched the documentary that came out about the MPAA. He definitely was working on the wrong concept, but I can’t get behind thinking that someone’s death is “good.”

As much as I loved animals, I kind of wished he’d done that instead. The man had a sick fetish for squashing art.

Ebert’s last non-cancerous molecule would be saying how much Jack sucked. Seriously, it was a feud.

So, I wonder if Ebert’s going to say, “Ah, I beat the bastard, I can die now.”?

Jack Valenti (voicing himself) explains the MPAA rating system in this memorable clip from Steven Spielberg Presents Freakazoid! Sadly, this clip is missing his classic opening line, “I’m Jack Valenti, and these are my cheeks!”

He’s directly responsible for the MPAA’s policy of shotgunning thousands of frivolous lawsuits against small children and senile old ladies for pirating movies with absolutely no proof whatsoever. Dude was a dick.

I thought he stepped down from being the head of the MPAA a while back.

It was about 2 1/2 years ago, but that’s really not that long.

Not compared to how long he served that’s for sure.
