I am glad to hear that the news is improving! Sending out more good thoughts!
I’m sending you both very good thoughts!
Well…I’m sending even better thoughts!
Great news, purplehorseshoe. You might not be able to tell from there, but I’m smiling.

Sending more prayers as well. Go Schmoopiee!!!
As long as we’re rooting for him, I have a question: does “schmoopie” rhyme with “shoo-fly” or “droopy”?
Glad to read the good news above, purplehorseshoe.
And I also think that once your mister is better, he should sign up here as Schmoopie. I mean, hey, we didn’t make him any promises!
“Droopy.” It’s a reference to a Seinfeld episode, supposed to be the most saccharine pet name possible.
No better, no worse tonight. They gave him a diuretic called Lasix, and let me tell you, it confused the holy hell out of me when I walked up to his parents and aunt outside the ICU and was told “He got Lasik!”
DAFUQ?!?!?
I mean, I know his organs are failing left and right, but I thought his eyes were OK … ?
AAAHhhhh, it’s to help get the fluid out of his lungs. Gotcha.
Anyway, hopefully, between that and the IVIG (IV-delivered immunoglobin) his lungs and heart should - fingers, toes, and whatever else can be spared - start working better. Soon, please, if anyone is taking requests on my behalf.
And for those who know what August in Texas is like: it’s thundering and lighting-ing :dubious: and gently raining, and the whole world smells like steaming-hot asphalt and damp grass. Damn “rain” has been teasing us for too long. Sweetest, come home.
Oh my.
I missed this thread in my usual screening.
Sorry to be late.
So, he was stricken with West Nile and suffered general organ failure?
That used to be really dire, but fortunately (as you have experienced) the protocols have been updated.
This is horrible, doubly so because as far as I can determine from someone who shares a message board with you, you are one of the ‘good ones’.
If I were still a Christian, I’d tell you that I would pray for both of you.
As what I am now, I can send you health and happiness.
Just in general, where in Texas do y’all live?
Not being nosy, just want to visualize the place.
I am happy to hear the good news, and will continue to keep you and schmoopie in my thoughts.
I’m sorry, but that made me tear up.
Hang on Schmoopie, Schmoopie hang on!
Thank you for keeping us posted. We do care. We care about you. I’m sure that all of those offers of help were sincere. Now we care about Schmoopie as well. Before, he was the guy our horseshoe loved. Your Schmoopie is now real and loved by us as well.
When (not if) he’s able to come online, you do need to show him this thread. Not so much to show him that he is loved by strangers…but so he can read the tear jerking love in your posts.
Taomist, that is the best rally cry ever! purplehorseshoe I’ve been keeping up with your thread with my breath caught in my throat. I’m SO glad things are going better.
Ha! No worries. A friend of his parents told them she has “half the Methodists in San Antonio praying for him.” The little old lady who lives across the street from his parents (“Miss P.” to everyone - you know the type) has rallied all her Baptist little old lady friends to pray (and, honestly, little old lady Baptist prayers count, like, triple, at least) and the Catholic school he attended has him on their prayer list as well. I believe his parents mentioned friends of theirs of other denominations, too. So we are covered on the Christian prayers.
Jews, Wiccans, Hindus, Muslims, and whoever else: there’s still room on the signup sheet for you.
Dallas.
So, he was fine this morning, no change. I popped in at noon and the nurse told me she’d taken him off his sedative - or, at least, minimized it - for close to an hour earler! He was able to move his fingers and toes as asked, and even shook his head “no” and “yes” to a few questions. So .. yay! I do really wish they’d do that while we’re able to be there
but, ah well. When I came in he was already on the sedative again, but he was moving a lot more than usual, so I spoke to him directly, even more than I usually do, and it seemed like he was sorta kinda responding. A bit? Maybe?
The rain turned into one helluva storm overnight. Good: I don’t have to water my plants! Bad: power got knocked out and something in our cable box got fried, so I gotta miss a visiting period to wait for the cable guy. His parents will call me with any updates - although, really, so far, he’s mostly just in a holding pattern.
Sounds like good news, with the responding and all- so glad to hear it! I just saw on my news feed that the CDC says that West Nile is really prevalent right now- maybe Shmoopie just wanted to jump on the bandwagon! Makes me very glad that we seem to have very little mosquito activity this summer at my house. Hoping the Mr. continues to improve and gets home with you soon.
Good to hear! Hopefully he’ll continue to get better. Even a little bit at a time is good news.
Keep us posted and we’ll keep sending those good thoughts.
Purple, I’m late for this thread, sorry - but I’m pretty much late for everything so that’s not unusual! So sorry to hear of Mr Shoe’s illness and I’m sending the best of all possible cosmic/cyber vibes that he gets better soon!
Stay strong, there are a lot of people sending you and the mister their best thoughts!
Hurray for the good news. Hoping for more good news after your next visit.
I’m glad to hear Mr. Shoe is getting better and Unitarian/Pagan/Buddhist prayers going up for continued recovery.
love this! Hang on Schmoopie, Schmoopie hang on!
Go, Schmoopie, go! Go, Schmoopie, go!
Hope all turns out well - glad to hear the improvements!
Got a “how’s he doin’?” text from his friend that included “Is he still in a medically-induced coma?”
AAAAHHHHHH! It’s that childhood game of Telephone all over again! breathe
Anyway, the antibiotics are, ah, messing havoc with his guts. Yet another tube. Now we have to gown-up and don gloves to visit him, as of this morning. Dammit, the few connections to him I have left are getting to ruffle his hair or hold his hand; now I can’t even feel that through the glove!
Otherwise, not much change. Oh, and apparently the cable guy is supposed to come today, so that messes up my carefully-calibrated see-him-four-times-a-day schedule. Rawr.
They’re initiating the controversial mosquito aerial spraying tonight in North Texas - I believe it’s pyrethrin. My husband’s at death’s door from WNV and I’m still mixed about whether or not this is a good idea, so what does that tell you?
