I’ll second opossums. They look just like giant rats, only uglier. Ewwww.
There’s also the lamprey (or is that just another name for the hagfish? Is there an icthyologist in the house?), the camel spider (which, while not as bad as military legend has it, is still freakin’ ugly. Also: not tecnhically an insect), the alligator gar, and the sea cucumber (I have serious issues with any creature that shits out its intestines when threatened).
I’ve always felt that wart hogs could win ugliness prizes. I’m NOT going to Google for images. That would mean that I’d have to look at the pics to determine if they truly showed the essence of wart hoggishness, and I haven’t had lunch yet.
I must say, though, that I saw some at the local zoo, playing with a ball, and apparently they don’t KNOW that they’re ugly, so I didn’t tell them.
IIRC Lamprey is a general term for a whole group of jawless ‘fish,’ while hagfish is a specific species.
Awww, now, Lynn Bodoni, surely you don’t think these warthogs are ugly?
On the flip side…
If you watch the golf on NBC this afternoon (3-6pm EST), you will probably see a long billed bird, so beautiful, it will take your breath away. They did so a couple of times yesterday. The bird doesn’t quiver a feather. It is frozen there and glorious to behold.
Lynn, you will be pleased to know that there is one less warthog on the planet, thanks to my daughter, who shot it while on African safari a couple of years ago.
Turns out, it’s not an easy shot. In an African hunt show on TV recently, I saw a gal miss her shot at one of these creatures. They chased and on the second try she missed again, but the camera crew faked it. So the next scene we see is of the dead warthog - actually shot, I suspect, by the Professional Hunter - but the woman took the credit (while looking somewhat embarrassed).
There are many bizarre deep-sea creatures that honestly look like nightmares made flesh.
