MRI and needles

I had to have a MRI done on my head today. After about 20 mins in the machine, the tech pulled me out and gave me a shot in the arm. Then I went back into the machine for about 5 minutes.

What drug did he give me and what does it do?

The MRI can require certain drugs to help visualize certain structures. But that drug is given IV (not a shot) and not needed for the head exam AFAIK.

Most likely it was a sedative to help you feel comfortable while all confined in the machine. Were you feeling claustrophobic? 1 in 20 people need a sedative while undergoing MRI of the head in an enclosed unit.

I wasn’t feeling claustrophobic at all. I actually took a little nap. I found the loud noices relaxing.

It sounds like you had an MRI with and without contrast. A series of images are done without contrast, then the contrast was injected, and then further images are taken. That’s probably what the tech was injecting.

The physician who ordered the MRI should have the report within a few days, which will have all the details (and the results).

Oh, in the “you didn’t ask but I’m gonna offer” department, the most common contrast for MRIs is gadolinium.
