I have a user whose documents list a column showing document information at the end. Rather like WP’s reveal codes.
What has she done?

Would you be so kind as to paste the “document information” into a reply?

Is is possible you’re looking at the result of a third-party comparison application a la DeltaView or CompareRite?

We aren’t running any third party apps.
This happens only with FILE OPEN
rather than the list of recently used files.
John Doe is owner of the document, Sally_Schedule being the name of the document.

You have “Files of Type” set to “Recover text from any file” (or whatever it’s callled) in the Open dialog. Change it back to Word Documents and it should work.
