Hallo, forgive me bumping this up again, but I thought Manos/MST3K fans might like to know that Mike Nelson and Rifftrax will be creating a new set of riffs to go along with Manos when it’s rereleased later this year (the man doing the restoration raised enough money to help out – his goal was $10,000 and he received almost five times that much.)
Manos is one of my favorite MST3K’s! Besides Tom Servo’s five year plan monologue, there’s some of the best riffing the SOL crew ever did:
The Master: Arise, my wives!
Mike: And iron my workshirt!
The husband coming into the house where little Debbie is lying on the couch: Honey! The damn car won’t start!
Tom Servo as Debbie: Yeah, that’s a real bitch, Daddy.
Tom Servo as Torgo chasing after the Master who has decreed that Torgo must die: When are you gonna kill me, Boss?
Tom Servo was really in his glory with this one. Kudos to Kevin Murphy.
Cinematic Titanic did Santa Claus Conquers the Martians a couple of years ago. I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard their riffing is as good or better than the original.
I was kind of hoping RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic would get together for one super-riff of the restored Manos… Looks like no such luck, though.
The first time I saw Manos, way back on original transmission, I was awfully ill – the kind of flu where you just sit like a lump in front of the TV passing the time and hoping you’ll die, not really reacting – but the five year plan struck such a chord that I just started to laugh helplessly, even though it made me feel physically worse.
The clips of the original film are amazing, how vibrant the colors are – or that there are colors! One of the restored clips is Torgo messing about with the wives, and I never realised they were not only wearing granny-panties, but have some sort of stripey red cloth under their dresses…not that I ever really needed to see that, but there you go…
Trivia: the guy who plays the Master dubbed Torgo’s voice, imitating the original actor’s as best he could.
The camera was a Bell and Howell 16 mm for KTSM-TV.
Bob Gudrey (sp?) was a young photographer who wanted to make a little extra money. It showed up at the old State Theater. People involved with the film sneaked out about halfway.
I’ve been following the discussion of the restoration in a thread on Something Awful, and apparently someone in El Paso with theatre connections wants to try to arrange a proper cinema screening of the newly restored version. It would be appropriate if everyone involved in the restoration traveled there in one limo, with it circling the block, dropping them off one at a time…
This Thursday, 8/16/12, Fathom Events is hosting “RiffTrax Live” featuring Manos: The Hands Of Fate. Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett of MST3K fame will be mocking the film LIVE (well, you know, remote video and all that) at your local movie theater. Manos on the big screen! RiffTrax! Can life get better! I submit that it can NOT!
Grrr. As I understand it, they’re performing it at a Nashville theater I’ve been to before, when I went to see Bubba Ho-Tep. Not gonna make it this time, though - BUT I’M NOT BITTER! I assume they’ll make this available thru the Rifftrax store. I hope so, anyway.
Somehow I’d convinced myself they were broadcasting this one from the New York theater where I’m seeing it. Oh well. I went to the Christmas shorts broadcast a few years ago and it was a lot of fun.
Our local theater is finally going to start showing the events so I’ll definitely be going tomorrow, I’ve had to travel about an hour to see the last few and ended up missing House on Haunted Hill because of it. Is anyone going to go to the Birdemic:Live show in October?
