Mudvayne

I’ve been suckered/seconded/sequestered into seeing Mudvayne on Tuesday night.
What can I expect???
My sort of music taste is usually Sydney Pub bands from a while ago e.g. Sunnyboys  - am I going to fit in???

Doubtful. Mudvayne plays a form on “Nu-Metal” that largely mixes very hard, heavy passages with slower melodic passages. The closest comparison would be to the band Slipknot, although that’s a better comparison for their earlier work. They did have a recent minor hit on US radio this past summer, so they appear to have toned down some of the earlier aggression, but it’s still harder than many peoples musical tastes.

They’ll be accompanying Korn on Korn’s upcoming U.S. tour - I’m guessing that their music is similar. Hopefully that helps you some…

Mudvayne are one of my favourite bands, well, for when I’m in the right mood to listen to that sort of music. It’s good to have playing in my room when I’m angry or need to get some work done quickly! It’s great to play on my iPod when I go running or I’m at the gym.

I’ve not seen them live yet, but I’ve seen recordings of a few of their shows and from what I’ve heard/seen, they put on a pretty awesome show.

The bassist, Ryan Martinie puts in some fantastic, jazzy/funky slap bass riffs but playing like no-one else (that I listen to). Some of my friends have seen concerts with him performing long bass solos.

Matthew McDonough, the drummer is awesome. I think he’s got double bass drums, or at least double pedals and mixes this with single bass drumming and puts a very unique rhythm onto their tracks which fits in perfectly and complements the guitarist, Greg Tribbett’s unusual (but great) timings and allows Chad Gray’s vocals to really come to life and helps to contrast between his two vocal styles (I think he has a really nice singing voice, and a very strange but perfect metal shouting voice).

Wikipedia has a great section on them which has helped me remember their names, and put words to the things I think are great about them!

The bit in the wiki about math metal is interesting, but I’m not one who usual tries to group my bands into genres anyway.

Hope you enjoy it, if you dont like the sound of it at first then I dont blame you, but just listen and it’s obvious that (like a lot of loud metal bands), they’re a bunch of very talented musicians!

I have a sort of understanding of their music. I’m just thinking that I might stand in the background and observe - watch what she does…
Should be interesting for a 37 yr old divorced father of a 7 yr old…

The dating scene is very interesting… :dubious:

Just saw pretend my name is witty’s post after I posted mine.
I did get her a Mudvayne dvd for her b’day so I understand a bit. We are going with a good friend of hers who is into the same music. She keeps telling me that I am going to look after her in the mosh pit - yee ha… - I’m 195cm, 105kg, so think I might be able to keep her safe and the other guy with us is bigger than me so I think we will be her door posts…

Should we worry???

Indeed it must be.

I’d say standing in the back may be the safest course, as there will most certainly be some moshing going on closer to the stage. As Pretend mentioned they do exhibit a pretty good display of musical prowess, so perhaps you can at least enjoy that aspect. Pop back in and let us know what you thought.

Thanks, will pop back after the concert.
It’s Tuesday 01:30 here so it won’t be until Wednesday am, whatever time that will be at your place…
As I said, I sort of have an idea, but it will be interesting…

Hmmm… It’s Monday morning around 8:30am or so here in the Central US. Could you do me a favor and check the obituaries, make sure I’m not dead tomorrow? :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a friend who’s a big fan of the band. Apparently the bassist is a schooled opera singer (!) and really knows his way around music. So even if the music is too hard for you, and it’s probably too hard for most, you can probably look forward to some playing talent.

She has “downloaded” some songs of theirs, and I have watched some of the dvd, so I have a bit of an idea, it’s just the “you will be in the mosh pit with me” bit that I am a bit hesitant about.
I have been to some pubs/clubs with her and danced around a bit and watched the “younger” people jumpimg around, but, it’s an experience… :dubious:

At least they stopped playing dress-up.

I first went in a mosh pit at about 28 years old with a half a dozen friends around that same age. It was at a White Zombie concert. It was the most fun I have ever had at a concert. The energy of the concert (and in the pit) was amazing.

I’m not a huge guy (kind of short actually). My friends vary in size. Still, most of the people in the pit were teen agers. We were just built more solid than most of them. Don’t take that to mean fat though… solid, people seem to fill out a little between 18 and 22. The kids started coming to us for the boosts up to go body surfing. We also spent the night protecting a 5’ 1", 105lb girl that we brought with us. All in all it was a very fun time, but we were exhausted and a little bruised afterward.

I’m 43 and I still go to hard rock shows, though “nu-metal” isn’t really my thing.

To add to what I mentioned above, I’m 37 now as well. In the next month my GF and I are going to three separate concerts (Staind, Nickleback, and Motley Crue). I doubt we will go into the pit though (if there even is one, TicketBastard specifically said no mosh pit for Staind, Crue is reserved seating, Nickleback probably isn’t heavy enough).

Well, I’m back - and I survived…

We ended up in the balcony (cause that’s where the alcohol was…) but we still had a good view.

They weren’t as heavy as I thought they’d be, but their music still takes a bit to get used to.

I would probably see them again (she now wants to go and see Korn, Disturbed and Hatebreed when they come out here…)

We had to make sure she didn’t get into a fight with some scrag who was being a bitch, but all in all, we had a good time.
