Okay, I was watching a rerun of Futurama the other night and Frye eats a mummy of the Professor’s and comments that it’s great jerky. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s a cartoon, but are mummies and jerky similar? Could one take an Egyptian mummy and chow down on it with no ill effects?
I’m gonna guess not… jerky is dried out in storage, and so are mummies, but there’s several thousand years’ difference in age. Besides, jerky has to be prepared before it’s made. I doubt mummy is.
Mummies were treated with natron, a natural dessicant found in the Nile valley (composed of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate with traces of sodium chloride and sodium sulfate) that dried the flesh. I suspect the natron would make the flesh inedible, or unpalatable at the very least.
