Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share (about my coffee maker)

I went to set the timer on my coffee maker. I noted that, having just been plugged in again, it was reset to 12:00. What struck me as odd is that, as you adjust the time forward*, it wraps through ‘PM’ before going on to ‘AM’.

It seems to me that:

  1. AM logically precedes PM on any digital clock.
  2. Even if it didn’t, I’m guessing the overwhelming majority are setting the timer on their coffee maker to turn it on in the AM. Why wouldn’t the company making it opt to go with AM first?
  • It’s one of these little four button dealies. You press either ‘Time’ or ‘Alarm’ and then either the ‘H’ or ‘M’ buttons to adjust the time. It then advances the time forward in appropriate increments.

Two words: Planned Obsolescence.
