Hate them. Any kind, any preparation, all taste like dirt to me. I’ve tried to like them, and I still try some every so often, but still… dirt.
My ex-mother-in-law used to give me bags of fresh morels, and my ex-husband used to cook them. I would choke one down, and try to forget it until the next year. And I understand those are quite the treat, but not for me.
I can do without meat for a long time if I have grilled portobellos around. Cut them thick, marinate a little, and grill them up with bell pepper strips, onions and the odd summer squash and I’m good to go.
Same. Both sides are coming off strange to me. They are neither orgasmic nor abhorrent. They’re tasty for what they are but I won’t miss them if they disappear tomorrow.
In the spirit of the poll, I voted “delicious in all forms.” But the semanticist in me wanted to point out that many forms vary from “taste nasty” to “will fucking kill you.” Lightly floured fried Morels, though, are God’s gift to man.
I prefer intrarectal too. Do you go cap first, or stem?
I love mushrooms AND find them kind of gross, conceptually. Along with shellfish, kimchi, and tacos de lengua, a food I enjoy but don’t want to think about too deeply.
I agree with this 100%, but selected the top survey option since that’s the closest to my feelings on mushrooms. Canned / jarred mushrooms are what I thought all mushrooms tasted like until I was 20+ and I thought that I hated mushrooms - actually gagged when I encountered them. Now I love them.
Same here; about the only type of mushroom prep I’ve turned my nose up at was a pickled mushroom, but that’s because I’m none to fond of vegetable pickling brine.
'Shrooms are about the only veggie that can stand in for my more carnivorous tendencies. Houlihan’s has made a jumbo stuffed 'shroom appetizer for decades now that is about the only thing on their menu that has not changed over the years; I can make a meal out them alone.
Pizza mushrooms are like boogers dropped on a pie. They are blobs of tasteless waste.
Mushrooms used properly can enhance some dishes. Burgers and soups for instance.
I don’t mind canned mushrooms. I am apparently uneducated and I wish I knew better. I love a portobello burger. I’ve never tasted the other mushrooms - how does one get exposed to the wonderful world of mushrooms?
My siblings didn’t like mushrooms (my brother still doesn’t), and I played along for a few years and pretended to hate them, but when I got older I gave up the pretense altogether and started eating more of them.
Portobellos sauteed in butter and onions + crusty bread + melty cheese on top = heaven.
I’ve been trying to eat more mushrooms in my quest to eat fewer calories, since they’re fairly filling and meaty. Kind of like tofu, really.
But like tofu, I won’t eat mushrooms raw. They’ve got to be cooked and laden down with tasty sauce (which probably defeats the health benefits, but hey). Don’t like them on pizza, either, but I’ll tolerate them in a stir fry.
I have an ambiguous relationship with 'shrooms because I can’t digest them. They come out as they went in and that freaks me out. But I still eat them in certain circumstances.
I hate canned mushrooms - they’re gross and slimy. I remove them from anything I eat that has them. I have a similar feeling about canned beans or corn, though garbanzo beans are fine if they’re canned, go figure.
However, if canned mushrooms have been blended to add flavor, they’re great. Presumably because they’re digestible.
“Mushroom ketchup”, if you can get it, is an umami-lover’s dream.
I like porcinis that have been dried and reconstituted.
If they’re good, I fucking love them. I had some wild wood mushrooms at a very very high-end restaurant that had been picked that morning in the forest, and they were insanely tasty with an amazing texture.
I’m certain that’s not the issue with me. I’ve gone morel-hunting in a relative’s woods, and it was a lot of fun finding them, but at the end of the day when we fried them up, I had a hard time choking down the bite I tried.
I like 'em. I don’t dream about them at night, but my ‘like’ list of vegetables* is pretty short, so I’ll take what I get. They’re healthy, and I don’t mind the taste or texture.
In fairness to the other side, both my brothers are 'shroom haters. One of them especially despises mushrooms in all shapes and forms, on the plate or in the ground.
