The one that always bemused me as a kid was Hoagy Carmichael on The Flintstones. A guy who was famous in 1927. And why didn’t he get a Flinstonized name, like Stoney Carmichael or Hoagy Carpebble?
On the other hand, Ann-Margrock seemed much more sensible, somehow.
He was born in Wichita, KS, but played in the Cleveland area while attending Kent State. I think it’s more likely that he and Carey ran into each other somewhere.
Chad & Jeremy also appeared as themselves on an episode of Adam West’s Batman. And I know Lesley Gore appeared on one episode playing one of Catwoman’s flunkies. She got to sing a song, though.
The Standells, best known for “Dirty Water,” appeared as themselves on The Munsters, and played “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”
The old NBC Mystery Movie used to have a lot of musicians trying to act. John Denver played a Western deputy on an episode of McCloud, Rick Nelson played a thinly disguised version of himself on McCloud, and Johnny Cash played the killer on an episode of Columbo.
Pat Benatar has appeared as herself on such fine shows as Dharma and Greg, That 80s Show, Charmed and The Young and the Restless. Remember, it’s not quantity but quality that counts.
I believe the episode with Hoagy Carmichael aired during the first season of “The Flintstones” and he was first guest-star they had the program. Thus, the precedent of using a “stone-age” name like Tony (Stony) Curtis and Ann-(Margrock)Margaret later did in their appearances probably had not yet been established.
Also, at the time, Ray Charles’ cover of “Georgia On My Mind” had just topped the charts making Carmichael “relevant” to a whole new generation who weren’t even born in 1927 (or 1937 for that matter).
My favorite from Extras was Coldplay, showing up to play in his terrible show “When The Whistle Blows.” He even mentions how ridiculous it is for them to show up at the factory in his TV show.
Luna guitarist Dean Wareham made an appearance on an episode of Law & Order once. It wasn’t anything big, like a defense lawyer or a suspect or even a crucial witness. He was a bartender that the cops briefly talked to early on.
