Music artists guest starring on television

The one that always bemused me as a kid was Hoagy Carmichael on The Flintstones. A guy who was famous in 1927. And why didn’t he get a Flinstonized name, like Stoney Carmichael or Hoagy Carpebble?

On the other hand, Ann-Margrock seemed much more sensible, somehow.

He was born in Wichita, KS, but played in the Cleveland area while attending Kent State. I think it’s more likely that he and Carey ran into each other somewhere.

Chad & Jeremy also appeared as themselves on an episode of Adam West’s Batman. And I know Lesley Gore appeared on one episode playing one of Catwoman’s flunkies. She got to sing a song, though.

The Standells, best known for “Dirty Water,” appeared as themselves on The Munsters, and played “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”

The old NBC Mystery Movie used to have a lot of musicians trying to act. John Denver played a Western deputy on an episode of McCloud, Rick Nelson played a thinly disguised version of himself on McCloud, and Johnny Cash played the killer on an episode of Columbo.

Heh. That house is about two blocks up from mine on the same side of the street.

Also, James Darren as holodeck lounge lizard Vic Fontaine in Deep Space Nine.

Phil Spector, Tommy Boyce, and Bobby Hart on I Dream of Jeannie!.

Pinky Tuscadero on *Happy Days *(hey, you said cheesy).

Johnny Cash (no singing) on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

Pat Benatar has appeared as herself on such fine shows as Dharma and Greg, That 80s Show, Charmed and The Young and the Restless. Remember, it’s not quantity but quality that counts.

I believe the episode with Hoagy Carmichael aired during the first season of “The Flintstones” and he was first guest-star they had the program. Thus, the precedent of using a “stone-age” name like Tony (Stony) Curtis and Ann-(Margrock)Margaret later did in their appearances probably had not yet been established.

Also, at the time, Ray Charles’ cover of “Georgia On My Mind” had just topped the charts making Carmichael “relevant” to a whole new generation who weren’t even born in 1927 (or 1937 for that matter).

bup, I think you mean Leather Tuscadero (Suzi Quatro). Found out when I looked up Pinky(Roz Kelly) to see what band she was in.

My favorite from Extras was Coldplay, showing up to play in his terrible show “When The Whistle Blows.” He even mentions how ridiculous it is for them to show up at the factory in his TV show.

Frank Zappa also did a turn on Miami Vice as a drug kingpin who referred to his goods as “weasel dust.”

Johnny Cash also did a turn as the murderer of the week in an episode of Columbo.

Who is singing for Tom as he does the Louis Jordan song Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby?

(Yes, I know they weren’t originally for TV.)

Luna guitarist Dean Wareham made an appearance on an episode of Law & Order once. It wasn’t anything big, like a defense lawyer or a suspect or even a crucial witness. He was a bartender that the cops briefly talked to early on.

Boyce and Hart were also on Bewitched, singing a song Serena wrote.

And Alice Cooper played a thinly disguised version of himself in an episode of NBC’s The Snoop Sisters.

How can we forget The Wellingtons (+1) as The Mosquitoes on Gilligan’s Island?

Is there no love for Bingo, Bango, Bongo and Irving?

Meat Loaf has acted in various TV series over the years. I’ve seen him on Monk and on House.

Mick Fleetwood was in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Mick Jagger was on the short-lived series The Knights of Prosperity, which actually started as a concept called Let’s Rob Mick Jagger.

Also, I believe the character Mimi on The Drew Carey Show was once married to Eddie Money.

Um, yeah.

Lisa Loeb on Cupid (go to about 7:10 to see her start singing).
