With Shreddage, is that a set of guitar samples, or a guitar Amp sim? I could use a good guitar amp sim.
They do have an amp, although the Hydra and Stratus are guitars.
One amp sim I like is Guitar Rig 6.
It has sooooooooooooooooo many options.
Hehehe, thankya again! Any engagement with the video like that helps.
Indeed! On top of GEM being used to make the effects; the music for it was recorded, mixed and mastered in Ardour, and I assembled the final video using Kdenlive. I owe them, and will figure out how to contribute something to all three.
Thank you!
Yeah, when I was poking around trying to figure it out, I found a place on the roadmap where it was intended to be implemented as a plugin eventually. If I ever get to the point where I could write some of the underlying code for Pure Data, that’s surely the itch I would try to scratch first.
As it is, I kinda had my hands full managing the synth. This patch for GEM looks like 2-3 different crazy people put it together, but it works. So, it appears I’m me in both text or graphical programming languages.
Hehe, I never knew you plugin guys were as bad as the physical gear heads. At least you don’t need a separate room for all the stuff you collect, I suppose.
So, how do you guys end up at a decision that something is “finished”? With my live bands, if we’ve worked it out to where we can consistently get through it, and don’t feel bored by it, it’s done. With my own stuff, I just get to a point where I can’t think of anything else to do with it, and think of it as either “done” or “I’ll get back to finishing that later”. Truth be told, I’m just as likely to pick up one and start messing with it again as I am the other.
My other musician friends tell me that a song is never done. There’s always something more than could be done to make it better. However, for me, I reach a point where I’m happy with the sound of it and it accomplishes what I set out to do. I guess part of it is that since my goal now is to switch careers to music, I have to release music in order to build a following.
When Pure Data starts up, the messages window says, among other things, GEM: video record plugins: QT4L V4L V4L2
so I can only assume it does already know how to output to one of those or directly to a file, it’s just a matter of figuring out how to do it…
Hmm, from poking around a bit, I think that pix_record might be the object I’m looking for, and from reading a few things, it might still work on Linux, but may have very limited codecs. So, lucky me. I’ll try using it the next time I export a video and try to compare the labor of using it to just capturing a window or an alternate screen.
My first album of classical music is out on YouTube! So exciting!!!
Very nice! I got the second like on some of them, first on others, third on some (and sometimes more than one because I have two YT accounts and I couldn’t resist).
I’m not really qualified to critique classical composition (or really, most music) beyond “I enjoyed it”, or “It worked as I expected that style to work”. Though, the ones that seemed to go more 20th century-ish were the ones I enjoyed the most (I am a man of my time, after all). I think the “Monday” string quartet might be my favorite. I really liked the slides and the tension (though, “Thursday (String Quartet)” and "Friday (Guitar and Piano) surely have their charms).
On most of it, I wouldn’t have noticed they were synth instruments if I didn’t know you were using synth instruments*. The only time that bothered me was on “Monday (Piano)”, where it seemed that the only way to get that sound would be if the performer stabbed their fingers down on the keys with the perfect heavy force each time. It kind of sounded like a pianist that was skilled enough to make it sound like a harpsichord. The other piano works don’t quite have this effect, so I kind of assume it was intentional. If so, then ignore me! (and really, that’s a performance note, not a composition one)
Either way, thankya. Nice work.
*At least I think you are. There’s a pop that sounds like someone dropping something (with reverb!) at 1:30 of the “Thursday” woodwind quartet. It’s like the coughs I’m used to hearing in live classical recordings. What’s going on there? I was almost sure you were using synths…am I wrong?
Thanks for your feedback!
Each day is intended to have what I imagine each day is like. So Monday is kind of frantic and … AAAAAAGH! Maybe it is overdone on the heaviness. I’ll take a look at it for a remaster.
I’ll take a look at the popping sound on the Thursday song.
Yes, all the instruments are virtual. I would love to have live musicians do the music but that’s not in the budget for now.
Thanks for listening to them. It really means the world to me that someone has listened to and enjoyed the music.

it is on Spotify now too, and should should up elsewhere in the next couple of days
So interestingly, there is a pop on the online version but it does not exist on the master track. So maybe a hiccup when uploading?
Sadly, I cannot replace the file without bring the entire album down. How annoying.
You have a good ear. Monday (Piano) did not have the right dynamics, and did not have the humanizer turned on.
I’m pulling the album down to fix Monday and Thursday. I’ll post new links when they are back up. I have to wait for it to delete, which takes a couple of days, and then reupload which takes a couple of days. Monday is my fault, but the Thursday problem is annoying because it isn’t on the master.
I’ve only composed for piano so far. I’m pretty bored of it, though, and want to get into music software. In particular, I want to add sound effects such as heartbeats, sirens, the clatter of kitchenware, crowd cheering, etc. into my music. I’m not sure how to do that yet.
I’m also composing a piece called SOS that will use the beat of SOS Morse Code - three dots, three dashes, three dots - to represent a sinking ship sending out a distress signal.
You could try web sites like freesound.org, soundswap.org, soundcamp.org, freesoundslibrary.com, etc., for freely licensed samples and search for the sound effects you want and download them.
The free ones suggested are good, especially for prototyping. When I want higher quality (and royalty free sounds), I usually go to Splice or something similar. Splice is probably my main go to because the price is pretty reasonable. You can of course also buy professional sound packs, and they’re usually of excellent quality but so very expensive.

Dang, the reverb made me think that one was intentional.

Hey, at least it doesn’t cost anything other than views/likes to replace it. I’ve let mistakes get all the way out and pressed on vinyl before. We missed it when we recorded it, mixed it, and on the test pressings. At that point, there was no way I was going to go through that whole process to fix a mistake that the whole band missed at every stage. If it takes us repeated listens to hear it and I still have to point it out to the others for them to notice, that’s the way it’s going to be.

Heheh, maybe its from paying for studio time and listening closely so I can potentially save myself some money. I really didn’t mean to make more work for ya, but that one just felt odd next to the others. I’ll be excited to hear the revised version!
I appreciate you pointing it out. I’d rather fix it now then later on when people have heard and said “This clown has no idea what he’s doing. I’ll never listen to him again.”
The album is live again on YouTube!
Other streaming services should be following along in the next couple of days.

“This clown has no idea what he’s doing. I’ll never listen to him again.”
Unfortunately, as someone who has composed music professionally for the last 35 years, that’s exactly what I thought. Great sounds don’t make great music. Great composition makes great music. I appreciate that it’s a fun hobby, but there is far more to writing professional level music than downloading nice sounds and putting them together.
That’s why I’ve decided to do a music degree. I know that it a music degree isn’t necessary to make music, but given my academic background, I felt like it was the best place to learn what I needed to know.
