Music for barbcue advice

Having a barbecue this weekend, and I’m inviting some friends from work. Now, I’m a former punk rocker and this colors my opinions on music, meaning I don’t listen to the radio. The Killers is about the only mainstream band I like that I can think of right now, other than punk bands that became semi-mainstream like the Clash and the Ramones. I need to find some good music that won’t annoy my non-punk work friends, but that I can tolerate.

First thoughts were the Clash, the Killers, and Toots and the Maytals (if you’re not familiar with the name, you might be familiar with the Miami Ink theme or the term reggae, which they coined). Oh, and Sublime, everybody likes them.

So far, that’s it. What else?

(We’re talking about early to mid 20s. I was thinking of some oldies, but I’m not even sure of that. Or Johnny Cash. Hmmmm)

Find a decent internet radio station that plays pop punk, and don’t turn it up too loud.

Ah but I hate pop punk, this is what I’m trying to avoid. Definitely won’t turn anything up too loud, though. Neighbors and all.

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

Are you sure of that? They may have used it first in a song title, but can you cite where they coined it?

David Lindley and El Rayo-X: Very Greasy

A couple of thoughts:

Visqueen (pop-punk, but good–Kim Warnick played bass)
Dusty 45s (rockabilly)
Similarly, you might want to think about bands like the Reverend Horton Heat, Wayne Hancock, or maybe Hank III
Kultur Shock (though Gogol Bordello may be more accessible)
Orkestar Zirkonium (wait till nightfall and everybody gets drunk before putting this on, though)

It’s funk, not punk but the Ohio Players song Fire should start the grilling process.

For barbeque punk you could go with Legbone’s “drunk favors for beer”.

Some other possibilities:

The Gossip
The Coconut Coolouts
The Divorce
The Catch

Why have music at all? Don’t you want people to be able to talk to each other?

I think that’s the trick, not turing it up to loud. Most people will tolerate anything in the backround. We just had a barbecue, somehow, I got away with Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, Some cd with 25 theme songs from 50’s-60’s TV, Phish, Sneaker Pimps and Grateful Dead (plus a few others). I couldn’t belive my wife didn’t change the CDs when I wasn’t looking.

Followed by Boston’s “Smokin”.

But you might want to skip Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House”.
