Music for the Deaf Art for the Blind

What kind of World would it be if an entire sentient life-form were Deaf. Would they develop music? Would it be based on the vibration of the environment.

Now what if this planet were such that eyesight could not evolve. What kind of Art would be possible? Sculpture would be my only guess, Different shapes, textures, warm and cold.

These questions come from an old vague memory of some story read to me as a child. A race of isolated blind people, who were all born without eyes, nevertheless had a fabulous wealth of Art. They are discovered by explorers. Later, others come and invade, pillaging the sculptures and other artifacts for the precious metals, etc.

The first thing your post made me think of was the race of aliens with no eyes in the book A Wrinkle in Time. Not sure if that’s the childhood book you were thinking of…I don’t remember the plot very well.

I find it easy to picture a blind culture still enjoying art on a tactile basis. Even now, some artwork is based on the feel and texture of the piece. I have heard of deaf people who danced to music based on its vibrations, so I imagine there are deaf people who would want to experience music in its vibrations too.
