Music from TV Shows

Two-parter, here.

Part the first:

I’ve been introduced to quite a few new (to me) artists and pieces of music through TV shows thanks to their shtick of having something playing through or over end scenes. Does anyone know when this became a “thing”?

Part the second:

The season premiere of Haven (A Tale of Two Audreys) had a song playing in the background during the ending scenes. I couldn’t read the credits, it isn’t (yet) listed on IMDB, and I already know the artist isn’t Sweet Talk Radio, as many of the songs from Haven were last season. (I asked on STR’s Facebook fan page.)

Did anyone catch the episode and recognize the music?

And I lied.

Part the third:

Is anyone else enjoying the introduction to music you might not have encountered otherwise thanks to this trend?

I think I remember this happening back in the Crossing Jordan series, which puts it in the 2001-2007 time frame. Anyone got anything earlier?

By the way, let me add that I think the next TV director who ends his poignant episode with Leonard Cohen’s Alleluia should be drawn and quartered. Great song, overdone already.

Part the first, Miami Vice used to do this constantly. Not sure if they were the first, but it would make sense based on its air date around the new popularity of MTV.

Whee! A friend of mine pointed me to a site called Tunefind, and it listed all the songs for Haven. The one I want is called November, by The Wilderness of Manitoba.
