You all look like you know stuff about things, so here goes.
I am looking for some music recommendations. More specifically, I am looking for the sort of music that you often hear in film scores, the dangerous music that builds ominously to a crescendo. Not much to go on I know, but I am looking music like these:
Everloving, Moby
Tribal war, Black Hawk Down
Ashes to Ashes, Black Hawk Down
Massive Attack, Angel
Does anybody get what I am after? Any suggestions?
I have this one, and I should have used it as an example as it is exactly the type of thing I am talking about. Good call.
Ummm, I’d find it rather inefficient to listen to every film soundtrack ever made, so I thought I would ask for recommendations, you know, narrow the search down a bit. Crazy I know.
The thing is, I know I should be looking at classical music for this type of music, but it seems to my uneducated ear that so many classical songs will sound badass, but then some bloody flutes or something will trill away for a few minutes right in the middle, thus spoiling the effect. That is why I specifically mentioned movie soundtracks, as they seem to be more focused. Something like “Dual of the Fates” stays ominous right the way through.
Michael Gira of Swans does this in a lot of his songs. The last album by Angels of Light, one of his side projects, uses it in some fashion on almost every song – you can hear what I’m talking about in “Sometimes I Dream I’m Hurting You.” And, of course, there’s the latest album from Swans, which has songs like “Inside Madeline” and No Words/No Thoughts.
That’s the track that pretty much defines building to an onimous crescedo. Off the same album, Mezzanine, Dissolved Girl and Group Four also fit the bill.
That’s what I came in for – not specifically the symphony, but his String Quartets. Plus, Shostakovich was (among lots else) a film composer of sorts. Dynamics are the name of the game, though, so maybe there might not be much out there that keeps dynamics pretty static.
